The override vote for the AWRSD School Committee and Superintendent’s Prioritized Budget will occur Tuesday, August 8th from 9:00AM-8:00PM. Voting will occur at JRB in the gymnasium.
TEACHER ASSIGNMENT 2017-2018-POSTED THURSDAY, AUGUST 10th
Due to budget uncertainty and second override vote scheduled Tuesday, August 8th, we will not be identifying your child/ren’s teacher(s) for next year on August 1st as previously advertised. Instead, we will be posting the class lists starting Thursday, August 10th at 8:00AM in a display case in the JRB lobby.
On September 14, 2017, a curriculum night is scheduled for parents/guardians with students in preK-5 from 6:30PM-8:00PM. The John R. Briggs professional staff will be meeting with parents/guardians in their classrooms to discuss their academic expectations for the year and how parents/guardians can support the learning occurring in the classrooms. Curriculum Night is a parents’ only event and we ask that students stay home.

Dear Parents/Guardians of Second Graders:
In order to help you prepare your child for advancement to third grade, please be aware that each child in the Ashburnham Westminster School District is required to have a 3rd Grade physical on file in their health record at school. Any physical exam date in 2017 will be accepted as meeting this requirement. If your child will be due for their physical in the fall of 2017, please schedule this appointment. Letters were sent out earlier in May regarding 3rd grade physicals. If your child’s primary care doctor uses a computerized printout of the physical that is also accepted. (The FAX # is 978-827-5699 if you would like the doctor’s office to fax the form.)

AUGUST JRB SNEAK PEEK
A “Sneak Peek” of the school has been scheduled twice: Thursday, August 24th from 2:00PM-5:00PM and Friday, August 25th from 9:00AM-12:00PM. The “Sneak Peek” will allow you to explore the school with your child and help him/her locate all the important spaces, i.e., art, music, gym, tech lab, and cafeteria. Please note that teachers are not obligated to be here but a few of them may be present. Also, please keep the classroom the way you found it and monitor any younger children closely as you explore. The “Sneak Peek” times are ONLY for our students and their families.
The school supply lists are posted on the school’s webpage. The JRB PTA has generously provided $2,000 to purchase common materials used at all grade levels so the grade level supply list request should not be as long. We are so fortunate to have a generous and thoughtful PTA!

The Briggs School participates in many programs that help us get additional funds to use at the school. Brenda Brown, one of our para-educators, organizes most of these programs on behalf of the PTA and School Enrichment Fund. Below is a list of the many ways you can help! “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”
J.R. Briggs’ students help save our landfills and earn money for our school! Here are a few of the ways our students help their environment and earn money or supplies for their school. Please help your children help their school. Continue to save these items over the summer and throughout the school year. Children can bring them to their class or lobby where collection bags are located.
- “Hannaford Helps Schools”
Purchase select products at Hannaford and receive a “School Dollars” ticket. Each “School Dollars” ticket turned in between September 1, 2015 and December 1, 2015 earns money for the J.R. Briggs Enrichment Fund. The J.R. Briggs Enrichment Fund is used to provide field trip scholarships and sponsor school-wide performances. Send in your “School Dollars” ticket with your child to JRB!
- “Box Tops for Education”
Each box top clipped from a wide variety of products we use everyday earns JRB $.10 for the PTA. The 2015/2016 school year’s goal is 50,000 box tops. The PTA uses the box top funds for classroom grade-level grants and PTA sponsored events. The class that collects the most box tops, both upper and lower wing, earns a “Healthy Treat Party” in January and again in June. Campbell’s “Labels for Education”
Keep clipping your labels! Labels clipped and turned in earn points to select prizes for our school. Our previous earnings have gone towards a variety of recess play equipment; through the PTA.
- Ink Jet Cartridges
Return your empty ink jet or laser cartridges to school. Money collected from recycled cartridges is used to purchase hardware and software for the computer lab.
- Cell Phone/Ipod/Camera Recycling
Your old cell phones, cameras and Ipods can be recycled through JRB. Proceeds from this recycling project are given to the Nature’s Classroom Scholarship program. There is a collection box in the office for your old phones, Ipods, MP3 players and cameras!
- Coke Rewards Caps
Collect and bring in Coke product bottle caps from singles and cardboard codes from 12/24 packs of soda cans from many Coke brands. Points collected earn products/items for the school through the JRB Enrichment Fund. Go to www.mycokerewards.com to view a list of participating products.
- Sunny D labels; 20 labels = 20 books
Save your labels! Labels turned in earn points to purchase classroom sets of reading books. Book sets will be awarded to each grade level as the labels come in throughout the school year.
- Price Chopper “Swipe” Labels for Education
SHOP, SWIPE, EARN! By registering your Price Chopper Advantage Card on line; each participating “Labels for Education” product purchased will earn 1 point credited to your school’s; “Labels for Education” account, automatically, in addition to the points earned when you clip them and send in to your school. Steps: create a profile, enter your shopper card number and select J.R. Briggs!
- Art Department: 1=liter bottles (like seltzer), bottle caps (not clear or white), granola boxes, cardboard pizza circles, wipes containers, large yogurt containers, cotton balls, wooden dowels, sticks (12”x1/2”), old CDs, bubble wrap, multi-colored yarn and large oatmeal containers.

READY, SET, GLOW
We are planning our second READY SET GLOW EVENT, which is a fun and exciting family night for Friday, September 22nd. The proceeds collected will be utilized to help purchase an adaptive/sensory playground. Our previous event helped purchase a shade structure for the playground, which should be installed by the end of the summer.
READY SET GLOW will involve a night of physical activity of walking and dancing for your entire family. Please block off this event on your family’s calendar and look for additional information in upcoming parent emails about how you can help with this fundraising activity.
If you are local business that would like to donate items for the raffle table or have your logo placed on the event t-shirt, please email Troy Berg, JRB Physical Education teacher, at email@example.com. Last fall, this event had over 500 participants, connecting many people and communities beyond the John R. Briggs School.
Also, if you would like to help plan this event, set-up, decorate the playground with lights, or breakdown please contact Mr. Berg. The planning committee has started to generate ideas for this year’s event but they would welcome additional input and involvement.
