August 8th Family Newsletter

Dear J.R.B. Families,

We hope this latest family newsletter finds you well and enjoying what is left of the summer. School is starting soon. Teachers are already coming in to set up their classrooms and only a few more spaces need to have the floors waxed and windows washed. We hope that you have heard that a new principal, Nathaniel North, has been appointed for JRB. Mr. North will be starting on August 20th and will be available to meet families as they tour the school during our Sneak Peek hours (listed below).

Lastly, feel free to call the office if you have any questions 978-827-5750; we are always happy to help.

Jennifer Lilley, Assistant Principal

Extended Day

Please remember that in order to participate in Extended Day in the fall you need to have registered with the Extended Day program prior to the start of school. Even if you participated in Extended Day last year, you need to re-register.

Kindergarten Screening

Appointments will take place Tuesday, August 28th – Thursday, August 30th. Kindergarten families should receive a letter reminding them of their appointment date by next week. If you do not receive a letter or have a conflict with your time, please call the main office as soon as possible 978-827-5750.

Sneak Peek

Sneak Peek will be Thursday, August 23rd from 2-5PM and Friday, August 24th from 9-12. During Sneak Peek, families are able to bring students to look around the school and their new classroom at their own pace. We have found that this practice reduces some of those first day jitters! You are asked not to touch or move items in the newly-set-up-for-fall-teaching spaces and children should stay with an adult. Office staff, Extended Day staff, and PTA will be on hand during Sneak Peek to welcome you and answer questions. Teachers are not required to be present on these days but are sometimes in getting ready for the start of school.

I am attaching the superintendent’s letter announcing Mr. North’s appointment in case it missed anyone. Also attached to this email you will find this year’s Ready, Set, GLOW flyer as well as a flyer for a Meet & Greet opportunity for incoming kindergarten students from Jana Harrison, Coordinated Family and Community Engagement (CFCE) Coordinator.

Ready, Set, GLOW!

Ready, Set, GLOW is back for it’s 3rd year. This year’s event is on September 28th from 6:30-8:00 pm. This family fun event involves moving, dancing, and celebrating together all while we glow. Proceeds from the event will go to support/fund the building of an adaptive playground at JRB. Sign-up flyers as well as sponsorship and donation forms will be sent out soon. If you know of anyone who is willing to donate raffle items to support the event, please let us know! This even has been so successful in the past because so many of you have helped.

Curriculum Night

Curriculum Night is an evening in which teachers share with you an overview of what your child will be learning this year and it’s a great time to ask questions too. Curriculum Night is for parents/guardians only (not students) but we are hoping to have some movies and coloring going on in the cafeteria with peer leaders from the high school to support those of you who need babysitting coverage. Reminder Regarding Medication at School

If your child will be requiring any medication (scheduled or as needed) at school, please remember to submit the forms that were went home at the end of last school year along with the pharmacy labeled medication. If you need a medication form they area available for download on the School Health Services link on our website or you may come to school to pick one up.

Please have your child’s physician complete and sign the medication order portion prior to the start of the new school year. Parents then complete and sign the parent/guardian permission portion of the form. On or before the first day of school, please bring the completed form and your child’s properly labeled medication to the School Nurse. For the health and safety of your child, medication will not be administered until these forms are completed and returned to the school nurse.

Third Grade Physicals

In order to help you prepare your child for advancement to third grade, please be aware that each child in the Ashburnham Westminster School District is required to

have a 3rd Grade physical on file in their health record at school. Please call your child’s physician to schedule an appointment for this required exam. Any physical exam date in 2018 will be accepted as meeting this requirement. If your child has already had a physical this year (since January 2018), contact your child’s doctor to get a copy or have them FAX it to school. If your child will be due for their physical in the fall of 2018, please remember to get a copy of the physical when you go to that appointment.

If the physical is done during summer vacation, you may drop off or mail to:

John R. Briggs Elementary School 96 Williams Road
Ashburnham, MA 01430
Attn: School Nurse

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this letter, please feel free to contact me during regular school hours or by email. Thank you.

The John R. Briggs School participates in many programs that help us get additional funds to use at the school. Brenda Brown, one of our para-educators, organizes most of these programs on behalf of the PTA and School Enrichment Fund. Below is a list of the many ways you can help!

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”

J.R. Briggs’ students help save our landfills and earn money for our school! Here are a few of the ways our students help their environment and earn money or supplies for their school. Please help your children help their school. Continue to save these items throughout the school year. Children can bring them to their class or lobby where collection bags/boxes are located.

“Hannaford Helps Schools”

Purchase select products at Hannaford and receive a “School Dollars” ticket. Each “School Dollars” ticket turned in between September 1, 2018 and December 1, 2018 earns money for the J.R. Briggs Enrichment Fund. The J.R. Briggs Enrichment Fund is used to provide field trip scholarships and sponsor school-wide performances. Send in your “School Dollars” ticket with your child to JRB!

“BoxTops for Education”

Each Boxtop clipped from a wide variety of products we use everyday earns JRB $.10 for the PTA. The 2018/2019 school year’s goal is 10,000 box tops ($1,000.00). The PTA uses the Boxtop funds for classroom grade-level grants and PTA sponsored events. The class that collects the most boxtops, both upper and lower wing, earns a “Healthy Treat” in January and again in May.

Printer Cartridges

Return your empty ink jet or laser jet cartridges to school. Money collected from recycled cartridges is used to purchase hardware and software for the computer lab.

Cell Phone/Ipod/Camera Recycling

Your old cell phones, cameras and Ipods can be recycled through JRB. Proceeds from this recycling project are given to the Nature’s Classroom Scholarship program. There is a collection box in the office for your old phones, Ipods, MP3 players, cameras, etc.!

Coke Rewards Caps

Collect and bring in Coke product bottle caps from singles and cardboard codes from 12/24 packs of soda cans from many Coke brands. Points collected earn products/items for the school through the JRB Enrichment Fund. Go to to view a list of participating products.

Price Chopper “Swipe” Labels for Education

SHOP, SWIPE, EARN! By registering your Price Chopper Advantage Card on line; each participating “Labels for Education” product purchased will earn 1 point credited to your school’s; “Labels for Education” account, automatically, in addition to the points earned when you clip them and send in to your school. Steps: create a profile, enter your shopper card number and select J.R. Briggs!
