August 15th Family Newsletter
Dear J.R.B. Families,
The start of school is almost here! We hope you are as excited as we are. Our new school principal, Nathaniel (Nat) North, will be starting officially on Monday, August 20th. He has already participated in a variety of district meetings as he becomes familiar with AWRSD people and procedures. Mr. North will be here during next week’s Sneak Peek (times below) to meet families. We also welcome Andrew Bell as our new technology teacher, Catherine (Katie) Proctor to our third grade team, and Carlene Comeau as a Stepping Stones paraprofessional.
Below find information about extended day; kindergarten screening; sneak peek; Ready, Set, GLOW!; curriculum night, medication/physicals, and important dates. Attached you will find the school calendar as well as our Parent (student) Handbook. The Parent Handbook has a wide variety of information to help you understand how school runs, but you can always feel free to reach out to us with questions as well. On the school calendar, we recommend noting the half-days earlier rather than later. We will send email and text reminders from school about half-days as they get closer, but many families find it helpful to note them ahead of time.
Lastly, sign-up sheets for BAND and CHORUS are attached. We hope that many 3rd, 4th, and 5thgrade students will take advantage of these musical opportunities.
See you soon,
Jennifer Lilley, Assistant Principal
Please remember that in order to participate in Extended Day in the fall you need to have registered with the Extended Day program prior to the start of school. Even if you participated in Extended Day last year, you need to re-register.
Appointments will take place Tuesday, August 28th – Thursday, August 30th. Kindergarten families should receive a letter reminding them of their appointment date by next week. If you do not receive a letter or have a conflict with your time, please call the main office as soon as possible 978-827-5750.
Sneak Peak will be Thursday, August 23rd from 2-5PM and Friday, August 24th from 9-12. During Sneak Peek, families are able to bring students to look around the school and their new classroom at their own pace. We have found that this practice reduces some of those first day jitters! You are asked not to touch or move items in the newly-set-up-for-fall-teaching spaces and children should stay with an adult. Office staff, Extended Day staff, and PTA will be on hand during Sneak Peek to welcome you and answer questions. Teachers are not required to be present on these days but are sometimes in getting ready for the start of school.
Ready, Set, GLOW!
Ready, Set, GLOW is back for it’s 3rd year. This year’s event is on September 28th from 6:30-8:00 pm. This family fun event involves moving, dancing, and celebrating together all while we glow. Proceeds from the event will go to support/fund the building of an adaptive playground at JRB. Sign-up flyers as well as sponsorship and donation forms will be sent out soon. If you know of anyone who is willing to donate raffle items to support the event, please let us know! This even has been so successful in the past because so many of you have helped.
Curriculum Night: Curriculum Night is an evening in which teachers share with you an overview of what your child will be learning this year and it’s a great time to ask questions too. Curriculum Night is for parents/guardians only (not students) but we are hoping to have some movies and coloring going on in the cafeteria with peer leaders from the high school to support those of you who need babysitting coverage. Reminders from the Nurse
Medication at school: If your child will be requiring any medication (scheduled or as needed) at school, please remember to submit the forms that were went home at the end of last school year along with the pharmacy labeled medication. If you need a medication form they area available for download on the School Health Services link on our website or you may come to school to pick one up.
Please have your child’s physician complete and sign the medication order portion prior to the start of the new school year. Parents then complete and sign the parent/guardian permission portion of the form. On or before the first day of school, please bring the completed form and your child’s properly labeled medication to the School Nurse. For the health and safety of your child, medication will not be administered until these forms are completed and returned to the school nurse.
Third-grade physicals: In order to help you prepare your child for advancement to third grade, please be aware that each child in the Ashburnham Westminster School District is required to have a 3rd Grade physical on file in their health record at school. Please call your child’s physician to schedule an appointment for this required exam. Any physical exam date in 2018 will be accepted as meeting this requirement. If your child has already had a physical this year (since January 2018), contact your child’s doctor to get a copy or have them FAX it to school. If your child will be due for their physical in the fall of 2018, please remember to get a copy of the physical when you go to that appointment.
If the physical is done during summer vacation, you may drop off or mail to:
John R. Briggs Elementary School 96 Williams Road
