School Health Services

“School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and lifelong achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and/or potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning. ” National Association of School Nurses 1999

The Ashburnham Westminster Regional School District (AWRSD) employs full-time registered nurses in all 5 schools: Oakmont High School, Overlook Middle School, JRBriggs Elementary School, Westminster Elementary School and Meetinghouse School. Dr. Lisa Rembetsy-Brown, of Meetinghouse Family Practice, AWRSD School Physician, provides consultation and guidance to the school nurses throughout the school year.

Health Services provided within the Comprehensive School Health Program include:
  • Injury and illness assessment and treatment
  • Management of chronic diseases
  • Administration of medication
  • Monitoring compliance with state immunization guidelines
  • Identification and prevention of the spread of disease
  • Vision and hearing screening
  • Postural screening
  • BMI (body mass index) screening
  • Referral/counseling/guidance
  • Promotion of healthy life-style choices
Physical Examinations

All students entering grades K, 3, 6 and 9 are required to submit a current physical exam by the beginning of that school year.  Physical exams are required annually for students enrolled in sports programs sponsored by the school system.  New students are required to have physical exams within a year of entering the Ashburnham Westminster Regional School District.

Immunization Requirements for School Entry

Massachusetts law (Chapter 76, Section 15) states that no child will be admitted to school unless they show proof that all the vaccines required by the Department of Public Health have been received.  The Ashburnham Westminster Regional School District will exclude any child from school entry until the school nurse receives this written proof.
