Getting the bomb to Japan was no small task. For one thing the bomb required quite a bit of assembly in flight. Naturally the military was concerned that the bomb would explode before it got to its target. The plane was subject to attack from Japanese ground and air attacks. The bomb was delivered by ship to an island in the Pacific so that it was in range for the plane to make it to Japan and have fuel to return. You can understand that it was top secret all the way.
