Family/ Health is a combination of Family and Consumer Sciences (Home Economics) and Health Education. Topics covered will enable students to choose a healthy lifestyle and develop skills that will prepare them for everyday life in the real world.
Grade 6
Grade 6 classes follow the Red Cross Babysitting Curriculum to learn about child development, child care, accident prevention and first aid. Students become aware of the importance of play and how to prepare suitable snacks for children. Responsibilities are stressed and students may be eligible to be certified by the American Red Cross. A unit on puberty, sex education, and gender equity is also included.
Grade 7
Grade 7 students are introduced to basic nutrition which will enable them to make healthy food choices. Health topic such as eating disorders and food related illnesses are presented. Students prepare food and learn safe kitchen management skills. They also participate in an inter-generational project in which they prepare and serve a meal to some of our community senior citizens.
