Overlook PTO
Meeting Minutes
OMS PTO Minutes--February 28, 2007
There were eight members present.
Minutes from the January 2007 were read and accepted.
Treasurer’s Report was tabled until the next meeting due to absence of the
treasurer due to illness.
Action Items:
*Pizza/Movie Night: This was cancelled in January due to low-ticket sales. It
has been rescheduled to Friday 3/23/07 from 6-8:00pm. The movie, Hoot, will be
shown. A flyer will be sent home and posters advertising the movie will be
posted. Ticket sale volunteers will be Brenda Brown on Wednesday 3/21 and Deanne
Smith on Thursday 3/22. Sue Q-B will purchase Gatorade and pizza. Melanie H.
will call to enlist volunteers for that night.
*Enrichments: Offerings were published in the newsletter with sign-up sheets
included. Offerings will begin in March and will include the newspaper club, fly
tying, and volleyball unlimited (photography will not be offered during this
session).
*Student Activity Board: Bulletin board was donated by Warren Richard at FSC and
placed in the hallway outside the cafeteria and gym. Thanks to Brenda Brown for
coordinating this! Enrichment classes will be posted here.
*Newsletters were mailed to students’ homes today.
*Agenda books: PTO has offered to pay for half the cost if the purchase price is
$3000-$3200. Brenda Houle has given information to Mrs. Jensen (8th grade
English); she will follow-up with her and bring information to the next PTO
meeting.
*Staff Breakfast: Maggie states that Charlotte Haschig has offered to co-chair
this. Members are asked to encourage other parents to volunteer for co-chair
w/Charlotte.
*Teacher snacks: “A-list” of snack offerings given to Brenda Brown. Maggie will
discuss purchase of money box w/Jeanne E. Brenda Brown will investigate
availability of vending machine
*Parent Budget Info Sessions: Dr. Zapantis has met with School Council members,
and school administrators to discuss next years’ budget. He plans to offer
parent information sessions. Suggestion made to hold a session at OMS at 7:00pm,
Maggie also recommends a morning session. Brenda Houle will send a Connect-Ed
message when time and date are confirmed. Other sessions will be offered at
Briggs on 3/7 from 5:30-6:15pm, at OHS on 3/12, and at MHS/WES; times and dates
pending.
Principal’s Report:
The magazine drive netted an $1800 profit, much less than previous years. Maggie
states that she had sent a letter to the school committee to reexamine the
incentives issue. She encouraged other members to do the same.
The Dinner Theatre will be held on 3/2/07. If school is cancelled this will be
postponed until Thursday 3/22/07. A Connect-Ed call will be made if it is
cancelled.
Progress reports will go home the week of March 5.
Internet Safety program is scheduled for 4/12/07 on “cyber-bulling”.
Teen Dating and Violence Prevention info will come home with progress reports.
Spring school pictures will be done on March 8th.
Kylie Brough won the Spelling Bee and will represent OMS in the regional bee.
Pop Warner football and cheerleading reps will come to talk to student on
3/9/07, sign-ups will be held on 3/16 and 3/17.
District Band Day is scheduled for 3/7/07 at OHS.
The bullying initiative has been completed with 7th grade student
Other: Gail Dumont asked about the times for the late buses from OMS. The late
bus arrives at OMS at 2:45pm and transports students to Westminster Library and
to Ashburnham Cumberland Farms. These busses are available Monday through
Thursday. There is also a “sports bus” that leaves OMS 4:30-4:45pm during the
sports seasons. Teacher passes are provided if teachers have requested that
students stay after school. Mr. Manser will give passes to students who
participate in his fly tying classes.
PTO Expo: Gail Dumont, Brenda Brown and Deanne Smith will be attending the Expo
on 3/7/07.

OMS PTO Minutes-January 24, 2007
There were nine members present.
Minutes from the November 2006 meeting were read and accepted.
Treasurer’s Report was presented by Jeanne Erickson. The checking and savings
accounts total approximately $7100.
Principal’s Report: Brenda Houle states that the Magazine Drive will be held
2/8/07to 2/15/07. A letter will be sent home that summarizes what this drive
supports including supplies for SWAP, textbooks, student activities and SOAR
prizes. The magazine Drive will no longer be done by Briggs: this school is now
doing a Silent Auction for a fund-raiser.
Barry Burbank, meteorologist, visited OMS on 1/17/07. His presentation to 6th
graders was for 2-3 hours. Students responded very well to this.
B. Houle sent a Connect-Ed message out this evening to all 8th grade parents as
a reminder about Parents night at OHS on 1/25/07.
Sixth graders, still pending completion by seventh grade students, have
completed bullying survey. This is to be the start of anti-bullying sessions.
Internet Safety program scheduled for April (date pending); “cyber-bullying”
will be the topic. Will be presented by a representative from the DA’s office.
The Spelling Bee will be held on 2/8/07. There are 24 finalists. Judges will
include Eileen Barnacoat and Brenda Houle. The winner will go to the regional
finals on 3/21/07 at the Four Points Hotel in Leominster. Chris Uminski is the
Geography Bee finalist. He will represent OMS at the state competition.
Action items:
*Pizza/Movie Night: License has been purchased. The movie, Hoot, will be shown
on 1/26/07.
*After school enrichment update: Newspaper, Photography and fly-tying will be
the offerings. Announcements about sign-ups have been made. Heidi
Hertel-Therrien has offered to do Ultimate Frisbee or a form of volleyball for 4
weeks, Maggie will discuss with Heidi. Recommendation made that this info be
included in the next mailing of the newsletter.
*Newsletter mailing: To be sent out the beginning of March.
*Ideas for PTO funds: Current and pending items to be paid for include agenda
books, enrichment offerings, movie license, student bulletin board, prize for
TDVAP night, Staff breakfast, newsletter mailings (x2), stipend for student
council advisors, 8th grade raffle prizes.
*Eighth Grade Raffle: Maureen Vanderhoof, 8th grade staff member, spoke to group
about the 8th grade field trip scheduled for Boston in June. The cost is $130
per student. Snacks and drinks were sold and a Chinese auction held at the
7th-8th grade dance. A discussion ensued regarding whether the PTO would be
willing to reimburse the teachers for the cost of the auction items (which
teachers had provided). Maggie made a motion that the PTO allocates $100 per
grade level team to be used for class trip scholarships. This motion was
unanimously approved with the stipulation that the scholarships be awarded based
on financial need.
*Agenda books: The idea of the PTO paying for half of the current cost for
agenda books was presented. B. Houle is aware of less expensive agenda books.
Further discussion pending.
*Staff breakfast: A chairperson/people will be sought to assist w/coordination
of this event. To be held on Friday, June 1, 2007.
*Incentive for Teen Dating and Violence Prevention (TDVAP): Maggie recommended
that door prizes be purchased for Community Night for Teen Dating Week. $100 was
approved for the door prize.
Other: Provision of snacks in the teachers lounge as a PTO fundraiser was
discussed. Deanne Smith and Brenda Brown have volunteered to shop for these
items. PTO will invest the initial monies to purchase the snacks. Follow-up
regarding the type of snacks (from the A-list) needs to be done with Brenda
Houle.
PTO Today Parent Group Expo is being held on Wednesday 3/7/07 at the Best
Western in Marlboro. Brenda Brown is attending. Admission is $10; OMS PTO will
reimburse any other interested in attending.
A letter was written by Maggie Porpora, OMS president to Vic Pulnik, Food
Services Manager, regarding issues with food storage that occurred with a
cafeteria staff person during the Lil’ Cesar’s fundraiser this past fall. PTO
members reviewed the letter and all members in attendance signed this letter.
Maggie will forward this letter to Vic.
Brenda Brown offered to investigate the donation of a bulletin for OMS; to be
placed in the hallway outside the cafeteria and gym. Information regarding
student activities will be posted here.
