MLA Works Cited Format
based on MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 5th ed.
Following are examples of the MLA format for bibliographic entries which your teachers at Oakmont endorse. This is the style you should use on the bibliography cards that make up your working bibliography and in the list of works cited that appears at the end of your paper. Basic bibliographic guidelines include:
- double space each entry, and double space between entries
- indent second line and all additional lines of information
- if there is a named author, list the author last name first
- use the proper punctuation
Books: For a book with one author:
- Author's name (last name first). Title. City where book was published: Publishing Company, copyright date.
Examples:
Fairbanks, Carol. Prairie Women: Images in American and Canadian Fiction. New Haven: Yale UP, 1986.
Rushdie, Salman. Midnight's Children. New York: A.A. Knopf, 1995.
For a book by two or more persons:
- First listed author's name (last name first), second and subsequent author's name(s) (in natural order). Title. City where book was published: Publishing Company, copyright date.
Examples:
Berry, Jason, Jonathan Foose, and Tad Jones. Up from the Cradle of Jazz: New Orleans Music since World War II. Athens: U of Georgia P, 1986.
If there are more than three authors, you may name only the first and add et al. ("and others"), or you may give all names in the order in which they appear on the title page:
- Gilman, Sander, et al. Hysteria beyond Freud. Berkeley: U of California P, 1993.
or:
Gilman, Sander, Helen King, Roy Porter, George Rousseau, and Elaine Showalter. Hysteria beyond Freud. Berkeley: U of California P, 1993.
For a book with no authors name on the title page:
- Title. City where book was published: Publishing Company, copyright date.
Example:
- Encyclopedia of Photography. New York: Crown, 1984.
For a work in an anthology:
- Author of the article (last name first). "Article title." Anthology title. Editor's name in order. City where book was published: Publishing Company, copyright date. Page numbers of article.
Example:
Rubenstein, Arye. "Children with AIDS and the Public Risk." AIDS: Facts and Issues. Ed. Victor Gong and Norman Rudnick. New Brunswick: Rutgers UP, 1986. 99-103.
For an article in an encyclopedia:
- Author's name (if given). "Title of article." Title of encyclopedia. Copyright edition.

or:
- "Muddy Waters." Encyclopędia Britannica. 1998 ed.
For books in series commonly found in high school libraries:

Magazines: Print Magazine:
- Author's name (last name first). "Article title." Title of magazine Publication date: page numbers.
