School-Wide Reading Program
2008-09Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
~ Joseph Addison ~In this packet, you will find books that your teachers have compiled to exercise your mind this summer and during the school year. This list contains REQUIRED reading for some courses during the 2008-2009 school year and recommended reading for other courses.
All students are responsible to read at least TWO books prior to their courses next year. You need to read at least one book for your English course and at least one book for your Social Studies course. This is true whether you are taking the course first or second semester. Also HERE is a response sheet. Use the response sheet to record your understanding of each book and give it to your teacher. Your teacher may have additional class assignments as well. Note that some courses have particular requirements (e.g., Humanities, AP English, AP U.S. History and AP Spanish).
In addition to the required list, other Oakmont courses have recommended reading to help students gain extra credit in a course. Students should complete a response sheet for each book and present this to the appropriate teacher to help him/her determine your understanding of the book.
We advise that you look at the list right away and get started on your reading early in the summer. The books are available at local libraries, bookstores, and on-line distributors such as Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and half.com. Enjoy the many places you go in the world of books!
