School-wide Summer Reading Program

Dear Students,

Our School-wide Summer Reading Program will take a slightly different form this year in comparison with the past two years. This year we have compiled reading lists that coordinate books with specific disciplines and courses. You should look on the lists for the courses you will take next year and note the books listed for those courses.

How will this program work?

Most of the books on the lists are offered as RECOMMENDED reading for specific courses or disciplines. By reading a book for a course, you can gain BONUS POINTS or EXTRA CREDIT in that course. You may read books for as many courses as you wish to gain the extra credit.

At the beginning of each semester, your teacher will ask you to demonstrate your understanding of the book through discussion, a project, or another assessment. It may be helpful for you to keep a journal while you are reading this summer. This will help you remember important events and ideas in the book and serve as a record of your thoughts.

A few courses on the list have REQUIRED reading for the summer. These courses include: Humanities 9, AP English, AP Calculus, AP U.S. History, and History of the 20th Century. Students in these courses are expected to come to class with these assignments completed.

What about second semester courses?

It does not matter which semester you are scheduled to take a course. Teachers will give credit for summer reading at the beginning of both semesters. This is a great way to get a head start in a course!

Are all courses represented on the reading lists?

Most courses are represented on these lists. If a particular course is not represented, you have seven other courses that should have recommendations offered.

Where do we get the books?

All of the books on the lists are available in local libraries, bookstores and/or on-line services such as AddALL Book Search, amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. Some English department titles are available at Oakmont. Contact Mrs. Erickson (Room 201) before the end of the school year for these books.

We hope that you will keep your academic skills sharp during the summer by reading. It’s the best thing you can do for your future!
