SCHOOL PROFILE

COMMUNITY: Oakmont Regional High School serves students from the towns of Ashburnham and Westminster. These towns, located in North Central Massachusetts, are considered rural/residential in character and are growth communities.

SCHOOL: Students from two elementary systems feed into Overlook Middle School and Oakmont Regional High School. Oakmont houses grades 9 through 12 with an enrollment of approximately 774 pupils (September, 2009). A strong college preparatory curriculum is offered, including Advanced Placement courses. Oakmont is proud of its varied curriculum which also includes an innovative technology program as well as numerous co-curricular activities. Many of our art students, our school band and our athletic teams, have achieved remarkable success on a consistent basis at both the district and state levels.

GRADUATES: Most of our graduates further their education after graduation. This includes enrollment in four year colleges and universities (60%), two year colleges (30%), and specialized training programs, the armed service and on-the-job training. Student matriculation typically occurs at the following colleges and universities: Alfred University,  Amherst College, Assumption College, Berklee College of Music, Boston College, Boston University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Emerson College, Fitchburg State College, Franklin Pierce College, Harvard University, Johnson and Wales University, Mount Wachusett Community College, New England Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Savannah College of Art and Design, Tufts University, University of Massachusetts (Amherst, Dartmouth, Lowell), University of New Hampshire, University of Vermont, Wellesley College, Western New England College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester State College and Yale University. Given the current financial climate, many of our graduates do take advantage of the Massachusetts State College/University system.

COLLEGE BOARDS: For more than 21 years Oakmont students have performed above the state and national averages SAT norms. The mean SAT scores for the past thirteen years (since block scheduling was enacted) are: 518 Verbal and 532 Math. Oakmont’s average scores for the Class of 2009 were CR 524, M 542, W 518. Approximately seventy-five percent of each class takes the SAT Reasoning Test. Our CEEB number is 221958.

RANK IN CLASS AND GRADE POINT AVERAGE: Rank in class is determined by assigning quality points depending on marks received and difficulty of subject. The computation of class rank, based on weighted Q.P.A. (Quality Points Average), begins in grade 9 and continues through grade 12. Grade point average is not weighted and is based on 4.0 for an A. A+ is equal to an A in G.P.A. but receives added value within the Q.P.A. system. Beginning in the academic year 2003-04, all courses are included in GPA and rank calculations.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT: AP courses are clearly designated as such on student transcripts. These unique courses provide a college level challenge as established by national guidelines, and are pursued by our most intellectually curious students. English, Math, History and Art courses are offered annually, whereas Music, Science and Foreign Language are only available upon demand.

AP English Literature and Composition AP Latin-Vergil AP Music Theory
AP Calculus AB AP Chemistry AP Spanish Language
AP U.S. History AP World History AP Studio Art

HONORS COURSEWORK: Beginning in September 1998, we designated our selective, rigorous sections with a clear “H” on the transcript. All other core academic courses are taught at the college preparatory level with the exception of remedial math and reading offerings in Grade 9.

UNIQUE PROGRAMS:  Dual/Supplemental Enrollment, Independent Study, and Career Internships are available to juniors and seniors whereas students may elect to provide Community Service at any time in their high school career.
