One of the objectives of Oakmont Regional High School is to have a well-rounded athletic program. Permanent values such as fair play, loyalty, team work, responsibility, resourcefulness, determination, and leadership, to mention only a few, are gained from a sound athletic program. Every student is encouraged to participate in one or more sports.

Oakmont athletics is governed by rules of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). The MIAA has certain rules which extend to all student athletes such as:

  1. Students must be passing four major subjects (Rule 62).
  2. Students cannot be older than nineteen (19) years of age (Rule 64).
  3. Students can compete for only four (4) years after entering the ninth grade. Junior High athletes may not compete with High School athletes unless the two schools are under the same Principal (Rule 54).
  4. Students must be living with a legal guardian and have legal residence within the community (Rule 61).
  5. Students cannot practice or be scheduled for more than one activity per day (Rule 56).
  6. Students must adhere to Oakmont’s Chemical Health Policy.

Required Oakmont Athlete/Activity Chemical Health Policy

All student athletes/activity participants along with a parent/guardian must sign a Participant Chemical Health Policy form. The first time a student signs the policy, he/she remains bound within policy requirements for his/her entire Oakmont career. The policy should be resigned each season or activity as a consistent reminder.

MIAA Mandatory Athlete Chemical Health Policy

During the season of practice or play, a student shall not, regardless of quantity, use, consume, buy/sell, possess, or give away any beverage containing alcohol; any tobacco product; marijuana, steroids, or any other controlled substance. It is not a violation for a student to be in possession of a legally defined drug specifically prescribed for the athlete/student use by his/her health practitioner.

Penalties for Violating the MIAA Chemical Health Policy

    1.  First violation:

When the coach, athletic director and administration confirm that a violation has occurred, and following an opportunity for the student/athlete to be heard, the guilty student/athlete will suffer the loss of eligibility for the next two (2) interscholastic events, or two (2) weeks of a season in which the student is a participant, whichever is greater. The parent/guardian and the student’s guidance counselor will be notified as soon as possible. It is recommended that the student be allowed to practice for the purpose of rehabilitation.

    2.  Second and Subsequent Violations:

When the coach, athletic director and administration confirm that a second or subsequent violation has occurred, and following an opportunity for the student to be heard, the student shall lose eligibility in all activities for the next twelve (12) consecutive interscholastic events or twelve (12) weeks whichever is greater, in which the student is a participant. The parent/guardian and student’s guidance counselor will be informed as soon as possible. If after the second or subsequent violation, the student on his/her own volition becomes a participant in an approved chemical dependency treatment program; the student may be certified for reinstatement in activities after a minimum period of six (6) weeks. Such a program and certification must be recommended confirmed and approved by the administration. Penalties shall be cumulative each academic year. A penalty period will extend to the next season of actual participation of that academic year, if the penalty period is not completed during the season of violation. It is recommended that the student be allowed to remain at practice for the purpose of rehabilitation.

    3.  Captain’s Rule:

If a captain of a team is involved in violation of the MIAA Chemical Health policy, his/her captaincy will be immediately revoked as a consequence.
