Oakmont P.T.O.

Minutes – December 6, 2001

The meeting was called to order by President Kathie Thibeault at 7:05 p.m. and the new officers for the 2001-2002 year were introduced. Treasurer Julie Gagnon reported the balance in the PTO account, with 21 members enrolled to date.

Kathie gave a history of the role of the PTO and goals for the current year. Sign-up sheets were provided for those members wishing to fulfill requests submitted by teachers for assistance. Opportunities are still available for those who were unable to attend the meeting and include items such as library assistance, junior class fundraiser help with Friday morning popcorn, grading/copying, special activities such as field trips and transportation support. In addition, members may contribute to refreshments for special events and staff appreciation. If you are interested in learning more about the volunteering opportunities, contact Betty Kazan at 978-874-0290.

Another area of concern has been communication, and Ruth Murphy agreed to pursue possibilities of a PTO link on the Oakmont web page so that parents have a central place to look for information.

Mr. Waight thanked the PTO for their efforts in the volunteer project, and suggested that others areas such as Guidance would benefit from regular help. He also provided an update on building construction, noting that the scheduled completion date is Fall 2003. Also discussed were plans for the graduation ceremony in June, and the possibility of an alternative location. A lengthy discussion was held regarding the budget situation, and Mr. Waight asked for the viewpoint of the PTO regarding priorities of academic and extracurricular focus. Members felt that if full funding could not be achieved, academic programs should be maintained. Budget preparation continues to be a priority, and the individual school budgets will be presented to the School Committee on Tuesday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Team Room at Overlook Middle School. All are urged to attend and become informed with the facts regarding these issues.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Ruth Murphy

Secretary
