Activity: M&M Graphs Part One

  • Identify the parts of a spreadsheet: column, row, cell, formula.
  • Use a spreadsheet to create a graph.

  M&M Graphs Part One

1) Open Microsoft Excel.

2) Set up a data table for answering this question: how many M&M's of each color do you have in your cup?

3) Create a graph showing the number/colors of M&M's in your cup.

4) Use the graph rubric to check the title of your graph. Then print your graph to the color printer.

5) Go back to Sheet 1 and create a formula for calculating the total number of M&M's in your cup. Here are the symbols you will need to create your formula:

  • Symbol Used to ...

    =

    Let Excel know that this is a formula; the equal sign must always be the first thing in your formula
    + Add
    - Subtract
    * Multiply
    / Divide

6) Save your spreadsheet as "4X-M&M-your name".

 

M&M Graphs Part Two

1) Open Microsoft Excel and open your "M&M" file.

2) Go to Sheet 2 and set up a data table for answering this question: how many M&M's did each person on your team get?

3) Create a graph showing the number of M&M's your teammates (blue, red, yellow or green team) received. Use column, bar, cylinder, cone, pyramid for the type of graph.

4) Use the graph rubric to check the title and data sections of your graph. Then print your graph to the color printer.

5) Go back to Sheet 2 and create a formula for calculating the total number of M&M's your team received.

6) Save your spreadsheet as "4X-M&M-your name".

 

M&M Graphs Part Three

1) Open Microsoft Excel and open your "M&M graph" file.

2) Go to Sheet 3 and set up a data table for answering this question: how many M&M's of each color did each person on your team get?

3) Create a graph showing the number of each color of M&M's your teammates (blue, red, yellow or green team) received. Use column, bar, cylinder, cone, pyramid for the type of graph.

M&M Graph Analysis

Use your M&M graphs to answer some questions .

1) Open Microsoft Excel and open your M&M graph file.

2) Leave Excel open, and open Microsoft Word.

3) Create a title for your list.

4) Click on the numbered list shortcut button.

5) Use your class M&M graph to answer these questions. The answer to question #1 should be first in your list, the answer to question #2 should be second in your list, etc.

6) Save your list as "4X-M&M questions-your name".
