Grade 5 Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Project

John R. Briggs Elementary fifth grade students, led by teacher Katie Bennett, have had a chance to gain hands-on experience with the scientific method by helping forest ecologist David Orwig with a study of the hemlock woolly adelgid. The project is part of the Harvard Forest's Schoolyard Research Program.


1) Dr. Orwig showed students how to check the school's hemlock trees for the presence of the hemlock woolly adelgid pest.

5) and did research on the Internet to learn more about how to prevent an infestation, and how use biological and chemical controls if you find evidence of hemlock woolly adelgid on your hemlocks.
