Deborah Sampson was born in Plymouth, Mass. When Deborah was 5 years old, her mother got very sick. She had to give Deborah and her brothers and sisters away. Deborah went to live with her grandmother. Her grandmother taught her to read and write, but Deborah’s favorite lesson was reading. One day her grandmother got very ill and two days later she died. Then Deborah was moved to a woman’s home who needed constant help. When Deborah was 18 she decided to join the Continental Army.
She disguised herself as a boy. Soon her disguise was reveled by getting wounded in the war. Soon she was discharged from the army.
