Auction Night

We do not know where to begin with ALL of our “thank yous”.  Last Friday evening was a great success due to the hard work of many people, generous donations from the business community, as well as from our parent and staff community.  Thank you to all who attended and to those of you who participated in the raffles, and auctions.

The Extended Day Program and J. R. Briggs Enrichment Fund is happy to say that we earned a little over $12,500 dollars.  These funds will greatly help our students in the form of scholarships and enrichment programming.

See You Again in

2 Years!

First Grade News…

Now that our first-graders are reading with fluency, we have been working on using higher-level comprehension strategies.  We want students to recognize that it’s not just about “getting our mouth ready, but also about getting your mind ready.” (Nancy Boyles)

Some things to encourage your child’s use of comprehension strategies at home would be to ask:

·   What does this story remind you of?

·   Why do you think that happened?

·   What do you think will happen next?  Why?

·   What was your favorite part of the story?  Why?

Helping your child think as they read will keep them engaged, increase their understanding, and foster their love of reading.

MCAS Testing

We appreciate all students in grades 3 – 5 who have completed the second week of MCAS testing.  Arriving punctually (8:20 a.m.) certainly helps ensure smooth testing sessions.

We will continue MCAS testing in May for students in grades 3 – 5.  During this time period we will be testing in the areas math, science, and social studies).

Please ensure your child has sufficient sleep and a hearty breakfast.

Book Project

It is that time of year again when J. R. Briggs is hard at work writing books.  We are once again participating in the book writing project with a publishing company.  The Kindergarten and 1st grade classes are writing class books, where each child is contributing a page.  The 2nd through 5th grade classes are writing individual books.  Each Kindergarten and 1st grade class will receive a free copy of the class book for their class.  You may purchase one for your child on the order form that comes home with your child.  Each 2nd through 5th grader receives a copy of their book for free.  Additional copies can be purchased using the order form which your child will bring home.  We do need all order forms to be returned to school with either no checked off and signed or yes checked off with a method of payment.  Because Kindergarten and 1st grade students do not get an option for a free book, financial aid will be available for those who qualify. Please submit this request to your child’s teacher. All orders forms need to be returned as soon as possible.
