News from ART

This year, in an effort to improve individual student art assessment, each child in grades 1 – 5 will be keeping a folder of his/her artwork during the trimester.  The portfolios will represent all art efforts for each young artist accomplished here in the art program at Briggs.  Students will use them to reflect on their own work and progress in art, and these collections will be available for viewing to parents and teachers during conference times.  I hope that these portfolios will work as a tool to display authentic student effort, skill and creativity, and will be an effective method for us to observe individual student progress.   Consequently, student art will be sent home in multiples several times during the school year.

Square One Art Fundraiser

This fall, every art student at J. r. Briggs School has been involved in creating art for the Square One Fundraiser.  For those who are new to our school, the Square One Company makes magnets for each child with their artwork on it.  This free magnet will arrive in November along with a full product/price list of the many available products that can be purchased by interested families.  Items include:  water bottles, mouse pads, hats, T-shirts, aprons, note cards, etc.  If families decide to order items, they will arrive at school in time for holiday gift giving.  Last year’s we raised $2050 which helped purchase many of the supplies needed to run the art program at Briggs.  I hope that many parents will consider supporting this effort again this year.

Many thanks to devoted parent, Ann Horgan who is returning to work on the Square One fundraiser again this year!

Thank you for your continued help and support.                                        Mrs. Richard

FALL FOOD DRIVE

Help stock the near-empty shelves at the Gardner Community Action Committee food pantry by donating items to a food drive running from Monday, Oct. 3 to Friday, Oct. 14.  This community pantry is experiencing a 6 year low in its supplies, and winter has yet to arrive! The pantry is used by residents of Gardner and surrounding communities.

Drop-off boxes will be placed around MWCC’s Gardner campus: near the library entrance, the commons area, student life offices and the cafeteria.  The CAC asks for donations of non-perishable items in non-glass containers: cereal, jellies and jams, spaghetti sauce, canned tomatoes, crackers, soup, pasta, juice, baked beans, canned meats and canned vegetables. Money donated to the pantry is used to buy meat, eggs, cheese, baby formula and other refrigerator items.

Donations of food or money may be brought to the nurse's office at the JR Briggs Elementary School.

3rd Grade Research Assistants

The students and teachers in 3rd grade are participating in an exciting partnership with Harvard forest in Petersham, MA and the Nashua River Watershed Association.  The Harvard Forest is an ecological research center of Harvard University.  Students are collecting data about the vernal pool on our school property and reporting it to a Harvard scientist doing research on vernal pools in New England.  Students measure the diameter and depth of the pool, air, and water temperatures.  They also take field notes on resident plant and animal species.  Activities are designed to teach the Mass. State Frameworks through real life investigations and are part of our EIC (Using the Environment as an Integrating Context Program).

The students were able to visit the research center and discuss the project with the collaborating scientist and view a presentation about how the New England landscape has changed since the first colonists arrived.

Teachers attended a 3-Day training at the center this summer.  Funding for this project is through a Mass. Environmental Education Grant written by Mary Marro of the Nashua River Watershed Association.  Please visit http:/harvardforest.fas.harvard.edu to learn more about the Harvard Forest.
