News from Grade 2

The education of a child is a partnership between teachers and parents.  You were your child’s first teacher and he/she continues to look at you as a source of information and endless support.  It is critical that you read to your child daily, engage in conversation with them and steadily challenge their ideas so he/she learns to support their opinions and beliefs.  We realize that we cannot do our job well without your support, so we need to have an open line of communication with one another.  We value any insight that you can provide regarding your child.

The Nurturing Nature of Support

Who are the champion supporters in your life?

These champions are important.  They cheer us when things go well.  They listen.  They ask questions.  They smile.  They hug.  They’re people we enjoy being around.

What kind of a champion are you for your child?  Your love and support for your child is critical.  But you can’t do it alone.  You need others.  Your child needs others.  How supported does your child feel by teachers, neighbors, coaches, grandparents, aunts, uncles and people he/she enjoy being around?  These other key adults are important players in helping your child jump over the hurdles in life.  In fact, the more supportive adults your child has, the better!

And by nurturing and supporting all the children in our community, we help them grow to be loving, caring people themselves.

5th Grade Student Council News

Thank you to everyone for contributing to our September Project.  As a result of the efforts of our 5th Grade Student council we have raised over $500 to purchase “First Aid Kits’ for the Search and Rescue dogs of Massachusetts.

Stay tuned for October’s Project…

Secure Building

The Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School District is implementing a “secure building” plan this yearTo enter the building during the school hours, ALL must enter through the front lobby door.  A camera and buzzer system in the front office will be activated to unlock the door for you.  Each school building will be secured during school hours.  The front door will be unlocked at the start and end of the school day.  After 3:45 p.m. all visitors must enter our building through the Extended Day entrance (to the right of the bus ramp facing the school).

Paper Towel Rolls Needed!!

Does your household go through lots of paper towels or bathroom tissues?  Once again… the music room needs your empty cardboard rolls for a musical instrument project that we are doing in class.  Last year, kids brought in lots of rolls to help us do our thing, so thank you for your efforts.  Can we repeat for this year??  Please save all of your paper rolls and have your kids bring them to the music room to be used creatively for music!  Thank you again!

Autumn

In autumn all the leaves turn yellow

The air is silent and mellow.

In autumn all the leaves turn red

I smell a fire going up ahead.

In autumn all the leaves turn orange and brown

The fresh apple smell all around.

In autumn all the leaves turn colors

The children lay inside by the fire with their fathers and mothers.

FALL FOOD DRIVE

Help stock the near-empty shelves at the Gardner Community Action Committee food pantry by donating items to a food drive running from Monday, Oct. 3 to Friday, Oct. 14.  This community pantry is experiencing a 6 year low in its supplies, and winter has yet to arrive! The pantry is used by residents of Gardner and surrounding communities.

Drop-off boxes will be placed around MWCC’s Gardner campus: near the library entrance, the commons area, student life offices and the cafeteria.  The CAC asks for donations of non-perishable items in non-glass containers: cereal, jellies and jams, spaghetti sauce, canned tomatoes, crackers, soup, pasta, juice, baked beans, canned meats and canned vegetables. Money donated to the pantry is used to buy meat, eggs, cheese, baby formula and other refrigerator items.

Donations of food or money may be brought to the nurse's office at the JR Briggs Elementary School.

Do You Need Health Coverage

or

Help Paying For It?

Did you know that health coverage is an important part of your child’s success at school?  Having health coverage means knowing your children will be able to get health care they need and can help relieve the stress of wondering how to pay for it.

As the new school year begins, it is important to make sure you and your family have health coverage.  In Massachusetts, there are several low-cost and free health coverage programs available to families and children through MassHealth.  MassHealth also offers programs specifically designed for working families.  For example, if you are working but feel your private insurance is too expensive, MassHealth may be able to help pay for part of your premium costs.  If your children do not qualify for MassHealth, they may be able to get coverage through the Children’s Medical Security Plan.

These programs can help cover costs for things like; check-ups, physicals for sports, prescription drugs, and emergency care.

To apply for MassHealth or the children’s Medical Security Plan or simply to learn more, please contact your local health center or hospital.
