News from Grade 1 During the month of September much time will be given to establish the goals set by our school-wide program, The Responsive Classroom. This program is built around six components that integrate teaching, learning and caring throughout the day while focusing on both high social and academic goals. 1. Classroom Organization: provides active interest areas for students, space for student-created works, and appropriate mix of whole class, group and individual instruction. 2. Morning Meeting: provides children the daily opportunity to practice greetings, conversation, sharing and problem-solving, and motivates them to meet the academic challenges of the day ahead. 3. Rules and Logical consequences: student generated, modeled and role-played and become the cornerstone of classroom life. 4. Choice: a daily opportunity for students to take control of their own learning is some meaningful way, both individually and cooperatively. 5. Guided Discovery: a time to discover proper use of learning materials, areas of the room, curriculum content and ways of behaving that moves children through 6. Assessment and Reporting: provide parents with an evolving process of mutual communication and understanding of their child’s progress. Emmett is a Search and Rescue Dog who works with Park ranger Jennifer Stowe. We learned about the intense training that Emmett has undergone and how a Search and rescue dog is able to find someone who is lost. We still need your help. We are fundraising to help purchase Fist Aid Kits for the Search and Rescue Dog Program. We are asking everyone to bring a picture of their pet (past or present) or stuffed animal to add to our “Pet Gallery. Along with your picture (clearly marked with your name and class), please make a donation to our effort. The “Pet Gallery” is on display as you enter the cafeteria…stop in and visit. Look for Rory and Brixen! Thanks, Student Council Secure Building The Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School District is implementing a “secure building” plan this year (ours is being installed soon). To enter the building during the school hours, ALL must enter through the front lobby door. A camera and buzzer system will be activated to unlock the door for you. Each school building will be secured during school hours. The front door will be unlocked at the start and end of the school day. After 3:45 p.m. all visitors must enter our building through the Extended Day entrance (to the right of the bus ramp facing the school). Parents Instrument Rental Evening: Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005 Art Room, 5:30 p.m. Paper Towel Rolls Needed!!
Does your household go through lots of paper towels or bathroom tissues? Once again… the music room needs your empty cardboard rolls for a musical instrument project that we are doing in class. Last year, kids brought in lots of rolls to help us do our thing, so thank you for your efforts. Can we repeat for this year?? Please save all of your paper rolls and have your kids bring them to the music room to be used creatively for music! Thank you again! Request from Mrs. Lawrence our school nurse: Mrs. Lawrence is looking for clothing donations; socks, underwear (only new sizes 4-12 however the popular sizes are 6 & 8), pants, and t-shirts.
