School Note Pads

This year the Extended Day Program and Nature’s Classroom Scholarship Program have collaborated in the printing of Home/School - “A Note to School” pads.  If you are a registered family of the Extended Day Program, your registration entitles you to a notepad (pick one up at Ext. Day.)  If you are not registered with Ext. Day, they are available in the school office for $2.00 per note pad; proceeds benefit our Nature’s Classroom Scholarship Fund.

OPEN HOUSE

Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005

5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

This is an informal opportunity for you to visit your child’s classroom and meet their teacher.  Please note…it is not a time to converse about your child’s progress or specific concerns.  Contact your child’s teacher to meet or talk at a mutually convenient time.

We acknowledge that you may have a time conflict with the Open House at Overlook Middle School, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Therefore, we have moved our Open House to 5:00 p.m. We hope this will allow families to visit our school first before attending the Open House at Overlook.

Please be sure to park in every available space.  During Open House and Parent-Teacher conferences, we open the playground and field areas for parking.  If at all possible, we will station parking attendants on the grounds to assist with parking.  Please do not be intimidated by the number of cars parked along Williams Road, as there may still be available parking on the school grounds.

Extended Day has requested that students be dismissed as early as possible on the evening of Open House.

5th Grade Student Council News

The September Student Council members of 5th grade want your help!  We need donations to help support the Search and Rescue Dogs Program and their rescue efforts as a result of Hurricane Katrina. We are asking everyone to bring a picture of their pet (past or present) or stuffed animal to add to our “Pet Gallery.  Along with your picture (clearly marked with your name and class), please make a donation to our effort.  The “Pet Gallery” is on display as you enter the cafeteria…stop in and visit.  Look for Rory and Brixen!

We will be having a demonstration of the Search and Rescue Dog Program next week!  That should be fun!                                                                                         Thanks,

                                                            Student Council

Secure Building

The Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School District is implementing a “secure building” plan this year.  Each school building will be secured during school hours.  (Ours is being installed soon.) To enter the building during the school hours, ALL must enter through the front lobby door.  A camera and buzzer system will be activated to unlock the door for you.  The front door will be unlocked at the start and end of the school day.  After 3:45 p.m. all visitors must enter our building through the Extended Day entrance (to the right of the bus ramp facing the school).

Making School a Priority

What can you do to make school a priority for your child?  Keep these simple ideas in mind…

§        Make attendance job #1.

Let your child know that unless they’re sick, they must go to school.  Let them know you value their education.  Limit the number of disruptions to the school day and school year; that includes medical appointments and vacations.

§        Show you care.

Want your children to know that you’re interested in their learning?  Talk about their school activities and projects.  Attend as many school events as you can.

§        Keep it upbeat.

Try to set a positive example for your children, even when your own day has been difficult.  If you show a positive attitude about your work, your youngster may feel better about their own.

Request from Mrs. Lawrence our school nurse:

Mrs. Lawrence is looking for clothing donations; socks, underwear (only new sizes 4-12 however the popular sizes are 6 & 8), pants, and t-shirts.  Any and all donations gratefully accepted.

News from Kindergarten

You Really Care!

Sometimes I bring home things in my hands,

A picture that I’d like to share.

And as I watch your eyes light up

I’ll know you really care.

Sometimes I bring home things in my head,

A thought that I’d like to share.

And as you listen carefully,

I’ll know you really care.

Sometimes I bring home things in my heart,

A feeling that I’d like to share.

And as you give me a gentle hug,

I’ll know you really care.

Each day children bring home something special.  Sometimes it will be something that they hold in their hands.  Other days it will be new information that they have learned.  On some days, they bring home things in their hearts.  Maybe someone has spoken a kind a word to them or just shared a big smile.  These things cannot be seen, but they are just as real as anything that they might bring home in their hands.

So the next time you ask, “What did you do today?”, please make sure your child knows that you are as interested in his/her thoughts and emotions as anything he/she might have in his hands.

Meet Ms. Moreau

Hello, my name is Jamie Moreau.  I am the special education teacher in the BEST classroom.  I am working with grades 1-4 but eventually our program will be grades 3-5.  I am originally from Maine; however I have been in Massachusetts for the past 7 years working and attending school.  I recently graduated from Simmons College with a Masters degree in Intensive Special Needs.   In my free time I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going to the beach, hiking and running.  This winter I hope to improve my snowboarding skills and possibly learn to ski.  I’m excited to join the team at Briggs and look forward to a great year!
