Notes from the First Grade

The first grade is so excited about the upcoming performance of The Tale of Jack the Pumpkin, from the compost pile and beyond….!  There will be two 9:00 a.m. performances on June 13th and June 14thParents of students in Mrs. Jengo’s class and Mrs. Gusek’s class are invited to attend on the June 13th, and parents of students in Mrs. Granzow’s, Mrs. Giannetti’s, and Mrs. Murphy’s class are invited for the June 14th performance.

Mrs. Christine Caruso has written the storyline, as well as some wonderful lyrics that will lead us through the four seasons as we find out what happens to a very squishy Jack in late autumn through the compost heap and full cycle in the life of a pumpkin.

Miss Cook has reserved the jump ropes and ribbons as part of the performance, and Mr. Seager has been practicing the songs with each first grade.  He has carefully organized all the songs so that each student was provided their own copy.  As you can see this has been a cooperative effort, and the show should be FANTASTIC!!!  Hope to see you there.

The First Grade Team

Flip Flops, Sandals etc.

From Mrs. Lawrence…

To ensure the safety of our students, we discourage the wearing of flip-flops and sandals for recess and physical education activities.  Please be sure your child has a pair of sneakers for these activities.

Also, dressing in layers is always best for this time of year.  And please be sure to mark everything your child/children bring to school.  We have donated a tremendous amount of clothing to charity since school started and we would rather return items to you.

Reminders for physicals that are required for students entering grades 3 and 6.  Forms should have come home with your child, but if you need one, contact me.

For Safety’s Sake…………..

We are asking that all bats, lacrosse sticks, hockey sticks and other hard implements stay at home.

John R. Briggs Summer Academy Information

The first round of Summer Academy enrollment for students in grade 1-4 is complete and some of the grade levels still have openings.  The available slots will be offered to those students that were placed on a waiting list and an informational packet will be mailed to those students’ home next week.  The Summer Academy’s focus is to re-inforce the skills taught in English language arts and mathematics throughout the year.  Also, the children will be provided with the opportunity to learn some additional test taking strategies to prepare them for the MCAS exams.  This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to benefit from additional academic support in a small classroom setting so please consider enrolling your child if you received an informational packet about the Briggs Summer Academy.

Briggs PTO Meeting…date change

Please note…the May PTO meeting has been changed from May 18th to May 11th, 6:30 p.m.

Guess speaker, Dave Belliveau from the Ashburnham-Westminster Community Access TV, Channel 8.

Math Skills

Hands-on objects help children ‘grasp’ math skills.  Math “manipulatives” are real items that show how math works.  For example, use raisins to show your child how to add five to 10.  How many raisins does he have?  What if he takes away three?  How many are left?  Seeing and touching objects brings math to life.

Tracy Mei Children’s Trust Fund…

Please consider remembering Tracy in the form of a memorial tribute to the Tracy L. Mei children’s Trust fund, c/o GFA Federal Credit Union, 299 Parker Street, Gardner, MA  01440.
