HOLIDAY Greetings FROM SECOND GRADE! As you finish up your holiday shopping please give some thought to giving two additional gifts to your second grader. One is the purchase of a dictionary which your child can use at home. Using a dictionary is an important life long language skill. Here at school we use The Children’s Scholastic Dictionary. This edition should meet your child’s needs throughout his/her years here at Briggs. The second gift is that of the gift of your time; taking some time each day to read aloud to your child. Even though your child has learned how to read, listening to you reading a story is a positive reinforcement of the importance and the enjoyment that reading brings. Thank You Guest Readers! Mrs. Bastille’s class would like to thank all guest readers for coming in and sharing their love for reading with us on the half days. The readers read their chosen stories aloud and then provided an activity as a follow up. We listened to some great stories and were involved in activities ranging from word searches to making reindeer food! We had a super time and certainly enjoyed having our guests in the classroom thank you again to Mrs. Arsenault, Mrs. Dancause, Mr. & Mrs. Girouard, Mrs. Mercier, and Mrs. Finnell. Magazine Fund Raiser Our school will be sponsoring its annual Magazine Subscription and Music Drive as a major fund raising project. The drive will begin on January 28th and end on Monday, February 7, 2005. This event is the major sponsor of our Enrichment Program (climbing wall, scholarship funding, and special programming). Please save your (family and friends, too) magazine renewals and new subscriptions for our drive. Magazine subscriptions may be extended, too! We have interviewed four of the students in this month’s group. Here is what they had to say. S2S: What is Student Council all about? Christine Keslake: “Student Council is about responsibility and giving back to the community”. S2S: What do you like most about Student Council? Cassie Fontaine: “I like the fact that you get to help people.” S2S: What are your current community service projects? Chris Cotter: “The Hat and Mitten Tree and the Food Drive.” S2S: What is your favorite way to help people? Josh Craig: “I like giving to needy people.” December Student Council Once again, the 5th Grade Student Council has chosen two thoughtful community projects. · Hat- Glove- Mitten Giving Tree New or slightly used items to be donated to an area Battered Women’s Shelter and Homeless Shelter · Food Drive Canned or packaged food items to be donated to the Ashburnham Food Pantry. TOYS FOR TOTS Please help Oakmont’s Senior Class in collecting Christmas toys for the needy during the Class of 2005’s 2nd annual Toys for Tots drive. Collection boxes will be placed in the main office at Oakmont, Overlook, Westminster Elementary and Briggs Elementary. Toys must be unused and unwrapped. Please drop off your toys at any of these locations until December 21st, or call Erin McDonald at 874-1793 to arrange for a pick- up. Thank you so much for your help! WINTER WEATHER We ask that ALL students have shoes or sneakers for inside use. We use every inch of the classrooms including the floor space for academic purposes. Wearing boots and outdoor footwear tracks snow, ice, and mud into the classroom where students are working and learning. Send in a spare pair of indoor footwear with your child’s name!
