End of the Year News from Special Ed

Our district policy is to implement the inclusion model.  This is where students receive special education services within the regular education classroom with support from the special education teacher.  This lends itself to the co-teaching model where the special education teacher and the classroom teacher plan and work together to create differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all the students.  When there is differentiated instruction within the classroom, everyone benefits from this teaching model.

At times, some students require a separate setting.  This enables them to better access the curriculum.  By providing specialized instruction which focuses on their specific needs, it allows their time in the classroom to be more meaningful and successful.

5Th GRADE BBQ

A HUGE THANK YOU to all of the parents who donated items and/or their time to the 5th Grade BBQ!  The students had a great time because of the generosity of so many caring people and businesses.  A special, heartfelt thank you for the donations provided by Ashburnham Hardware Store, Solo Cup Company, Sterling Ice Cream, the 2005 Graduated Oakmont Class, Oakmont Regional High School (Oak-O-Matic Grill), Jay Sharron (our DJ), Tyco-Simplex-Grinnell and the Friends of Briggs PTO.

P.S. Thank you also to the committee of parents who organized the BBQ.  The food was great and despite the drizzle, everyone had a great time.

A HUGE Thank You!

We want to express our gratitude to our school community of students and parents.  Through your efforts we have had a great school year.  We may be prejudice but we feel we do have the best kids!

Good luck to our 5th graders going off to Overlook, the best of luck.  We know you are well prepared for your years at the middle school.

And, welcome to our new kindergarten students entering school in the fall.  Their next six years will be filled with not only academic growth, but also social development.

Sadly, we say good-by to our two retirees.  Mrs. McDonough, is leaving us after 32 years of committed service to our early learners.  And, Mr. Ward, our evening custodian is off to enjoy a life of fishing and hunting.  BEST WISHES to you both!

Summer Reading Program

The Massachusetts Teachers Association is sponsoring another MTA/Red Sox Reading Game.  Children who pledge to read nine books, one for each position on the ball field, will be entered into a drawing to win free tickets to a September Red Sox game at Fenway Park.  For additional information, go to www.readingmatters.org, the contest website.

Also, the Ashburnham public library supports this MTA/Red Sox program and will be offering an additional program titled Going Places @ your library.  By the end of the school year, a representative from the Ashburnham Public Library will talk to the students about the importance of reading throughout the summer and how the library can help the students select the books that they would like to read. Each program compliments one another and can be done simultaneously.  The Briggs’ teachers recognize the importance of reading throughout the summer and support their students’ involvement with the MTA/Red Sox Reading Game and Going Places@ your library

Grade 3 MA Hall of Fame Now online!

The 3rd grade students have recently completed their MA Hall of Fame web pages, a project that they have been working on in art and technology class for the second half of the year.  If you have Internet access from home or work, you can find your child’s web page by going to the Briggs’ webpage (www.awrsd.org/jrb) and clicking on the “Grade 3 MA Hall of Fame” link.  Note:  if you checked “I deny permission” on the web page publishing permission form that went home at the beginning of the year, your child’s work will NOT be posted.  The students are very proud of their work and would love to have an opportunity to show their work to you!

Mrs. Davis (Tech Teacher) Mrs. Richard (Art Teacher).

Moved or Moving?

If you have moved or are planning a move (i.e. same town – different address, different town), you need to contact the school office ASAP.  Not all school offices are open during the summer months and we need to be sure all paper work is in place to ensure your child’s placement for the next school year.  Please contact us in writing prior to June 17th.

Please be sure that all picture payments, library, lunch, and field trip bills are paid so that there will not be a delay in receiving the year books.  Thank you in advance.

THANK YOU!!!

The school year is quickly ending and we have had a busy year.  We would like to thank all the teachers and parents who have supported the PTO this year.  Whether it was working or organizing events, cooking, making phone calls, assembling yearbooks, participating in fundraisers, coming to meetings or offering suggestions every little bit helps and the support is wonderful.  We hope you were able to take advantage of some of our programs, had fun, and created some family memories.  Enjoy your summer and we will see you in the fall with some great new ideas and some old favorites.
