End of the Year News from Grade 5

 READ! READ! READ! READ!

Among the literature sent home recently, from Overlook, was a packet explaining the 6th grade Summer Reading Program. Included in this program are incentives such as S.O.A.R. cards, extra credit towards their language arts grade, potential publication in Overlook’s annual Project W.R.I.T.E., and a participation certificate of achievement. Wow! The rewards for reading are great. Please don’t forget the rewards for reading are also endless… knowledge gained, personal connections made, mysteries solved, relaxation, anticipation, clarification, etc. Good readers read, great readers read constantly.

The summer reading packet includes six pages of suggested reading titles and authors. Please remember our local library has so much to offer. Borrowing books from classmates is also a neat way to curb expenses and may lead to a great conversation. Your child may want to start a summer book club with a few friends.

There are three options for book review formats.  A memo was sent home (5/31/05) explaining each format in detail.  The Overlook Reading Program is optional yet highly encouraged. Enjoying many good books (magazines, guides, newspapers) this summer is also highly encouraged.

Happy Reading!

Summer Reading Program

The Massachusetts Teachers Association is sponsoring another MTA/Red Sox Reading Game.  Children who pledge to read nine books, one for each position on the ball field, will be entered into a drawing to win free tickets to a September Red Sox game at Fenway Park.  For additional information, go to www.readingmatters.org, the contest website.

Also, the Ashburnham public library supports this MTA/Red Sox program and will be offering an additional program titled Going Places @ your library.  By the end of the school year, a representative from the Ashburnham Public Library will talk to the students about the importance of reading throughout the summer and how the library can help the students select the books that they would like to read. Each program compliments one another and can be done simultaneously.  The Briggs’ teachers recognize the importance of reading throughout the summer and support their students’ involvement with the MTA/Red Sox Reading Game and Going Places@ your library.  Information about the MTA/Red Sox Reading Game is attached.

More 5th Grade News…

Structures Museum a Success!

Thank you to 2M, 3B, 3BA, and 3G for attending the Structures Museum in 5R. The 5th grade students in 5R were able to display and explain their recyclable structures, straw structures, and truss bridges to a wonderful audience. A special thank you goes out to Mr. Latour (Emily’s dad) for giving 5R a special lesson on bridge design.

Congratulations!

Thirty-five 5th graders were entered in the Boston College Massachusetts Science Poetry Contest. Over one thousand students in Massachusetts entered this contest.

Honorable Mention was awarded to Kristine Keslake in the Most Humorous Category for her poem entitled, “Flowers are Beautiful”. Kristine is a student in Mrs. Jackson’s classroom.

Second Place was awarded to Ashley Buono and Amanda Lashua in the Cooperative Category for their poem entitled, “A Tornado is Coming”. Ashley and Amanda are students in Mrs. Robichaud’s classroom.

Thank you to all poets who participated. We are very proud of your efforts.

Moved or Moving?

If you have moved or are planning a move (i.e. same town – different address, different town), you need to contact the school office ASAP.  Not all school offices are open during the summer months and we need to be sure all paper work is in place to ensure your child’s placement for the next school year.  Please contact us in writing prior to June 17th.

Lost & Found……..

We currently have four bags of lost & found items on the stage.  We will be disposing of these items June 22nd.  If you are missing things (coats, hats, boots, hats, lunch boxes, sweaters, sweatshirts), please come in soon to look through and claim your child’s things.

The entire staff at John R. Briggs thoroughly enjoyed the Appreciation Day breakfast and lunch.  Everything was delicious.

Yearbooks

Please be sure that all picture payments, library, lunch, and field trip bills are paid so that there will not be a delay in receiving the year books.  Thank you in advance.

From the Library:

All library books are due back NOW.  Please help your children locate any missing library materials.  Under the bed, on their own bookshelves, in their closets, and under the couch seem to be where many missing books are found!

Please also encourage your children to do some reading everyday during the summer.  It helps them so much to become better readers!  Stevens Memorial Library in the center of Ashburnham is also open all summer and there is a summer reading program there for all children.  Hope you can participate!
