End of the Year News from Grade 4 Grade 4 has just finished the English Language Arts and Math MCAS tests. The children worked very hard and we would like to thank parents for their support in helping us prepare for this testing. Our students did a great job on their book project board games. Sharing them in class gave everyone the opportunity to learn more about many non-fiction subjects. Students are currently working on a cereal box project based on a historical fiction book. The final reading project will be our annual book character costume parade. This will be held in the morning Friday June 17th. We look forward to seeing all our students’ characters and hope many parents will be able to come and see them parade through the front lobby. Coming up soon will be our June 8th field trip on the Quinnetukut II riverboat on the Connecticut River. This trip is the culmination of our EIC program. We will observe rock formations as well as plant and wildlife of the river valley. On June 9th, each classroom will host an end of the year celebration for EIC. If you would like to help or donate refreshments or paper goods (related to the environment) for this event, please contact your child’s teacher. We hope all of our students will enjoy their summer and continue reading, writing and practicing their math skills! NOTE FROM OUR NURSE All medication should be picked up on June 20th or June 21st before noon. Copies if immunization records for camp WILL NOT be available after June 21, 2005. Babysitting & Child/Infant CPR Class For more information contact Lisa: 978-343-4443 Summer Academy Information The second round of invitations have been sent home. The enrollment forms for the Briggs’ Summer Academy went home a few weeks ago to those students eligible to attend who are currently in grades 2, 3 and 4. The deadline to enroll in the Briggs Summer Academy is Tuesday, June 7th. After this date, available slots will be offered to those students that were placed on an alternate list. The Summer Academy’s focus is to re-enforce the skills taught in English language arts and mathematics throughout the year. Also, the children will be provided with the opportunity to learn some additional test taking strategies to prepare them for the MCAS exams. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to benefit from additional academic support in a small classroom setting so please consider enrolling your child if you received an informational packet about the Briggs Summer Academy. Help Wanted…………. The JRB PTO is looking for donations of summer fun things (travel activities, pool toys, rainy day activities, sun screen, bug spray, beach items, etc.) for a free raffle. Moved or Moving? If you have moved or are planning a move (i.e. same town – different address, different town), you need to contact the school office ASAP. Children who pledge to read nine books, one for each position on the ball field, will be entered into a drawing to win free tickets to a September Red Sox game at Fenway Park. For additional information, go to www.readingmatters.org, the contest website. Also, the Ashburnham public library supports this MTA/Red Sox program and will be offering an additional program titled Going Places @ your library. By the end of the school year, a representative from the Ashburnham Public Library will talk to the students about the importance of reading throughout the summer and how the library can help the students select the books that they would like to read. Each program compliments one another and can be done simultaneously. The Briggs teachers recognize the importance of reading throughout the summer and support their students’ involvement with the MTA/Red Sox Reading Game and Going Places@ your library. GOT SNEAKERS?
