End of the Year News from Grade 3

The School year is rapidly coming to a close. How’d that happen? It seems as if the year has just flown by in third grade but we still have a lot more coming up before our time together comes to an end.

We have recently taken both third and fifth graders on field trips to the Meetinghouse Cemetery as part of our exploration of local history and the Revolutionary era. The graveyard contains the graves of war residents from Ashburnham.

The Legends Program will begin during the week of June 5th under the direction of Carl Thomson. He will help the students respond to the work we are doing in class through songs, dance, creative writing, and the music of this historic era.

Our third grade team strongly suggests that all students continue reading over the summer to keep their skills sharp. Sharing reading time can keep a family close and connected. If you go on an adventure or do something special together extend it by finding a book that will help make some more connections for your child.

It has been a pleasure having your children in our classrooms this year.

Please have lots of wonderful family time together with the children over the summer vacation.

Summer Academy Information

The enrollment forms for the Briggs’ Summer Academy went home a few weeks ago to those students eligible to attend who are currently in grades 2, 3 and 4.  The deadline to enroll in the Briggs Summer Academy is Friday, May 26th.  After this date, available slots will be offered to those students that were placed on an alternate list.  The Summer Academy’s focus is to re-enforce the skills taught in English language arts and mathematics throughout the year.  Also, the children will be provided with the opportunity to learn some additional test taking strategies to prepare them for the MCAS exams.  This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to benefit from additional academic support in a small classroom setting so please consider enrolling your child if you received an informational packet about the Briggs Summer Academy.

5th Grade May Student Council

Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Memorial Day?  Have you ever stopped to appreciate it?  If we didn’t have the day off from school, would you even know it was Memorial Day?  I know I would!

It’s a special holiday that gives us the opportunity to pay our respect to those who gave their lives to protect our country.  Granted you don’t get candy or presents.  This month the Student Council has decided to plant flowers on the graves of many of our Ashburnham Veterans.

Please wear our patriotic colors of red, white and blue on Friday, May 27th as we celebrate Memorial Day at John R. Briggs Elementary School.

Our 5th Grade Student Council members will be hosting the Memorial Day ceremony.  Some of our students will be doing a flag folding ceremony, reading speeches, and talking about the meaning of Memorial Day.

Moved or Moving?

If you have moved or are planning a move (i.e. same town – different address, different town), you need to contact the school office ASAP.  Not all school offices are open during the summer months and we need to be sure all paper work is in place to ensure your child’s placement for the next school year.  Please contact us in writing prior to June 17th.

From the Library:

All library books are due back on Thursday, June 9th- two weeks from now.  Please help your children locate any missing library materials.  Under the bed, on their own bookshelves, in their closets, and under the couch seem to be where many missing books are found!

Please also encourage your children to do some reading everyday during the summer.  It helps them so much to become better readers!  Stevens Memorial Library in the center of Ashburnham is also open all summer and there is a summer reading program there for all children.  Hope you can participate!
