News from the Specialists….

As part of standards-based education in MA, specialists teachers strive to create interdisciplinary units that integrate the core curriculum (math, language arts, social studies and science) with our subject areas (art, music, technology, library media and physical education). An example is the MA Hall of Fame project currently underway in our third grade classes. The MA Curriculum Frameworks for third grade social studies require that after reading biographical information about a person from Massachusetts, students summarize the person’s life and achievements. Classroom teachers assign a famous person from MA to each student (for example, Paul Revere, Clara Barton, and Norman Rockwell). Students then use the library and computer lab to research that person. Students are taught how to scan non-fiction materials (both print and electronic) for information and take notes. Students then use that information, including printed pictures of the person, to create a puppet in art class. Students sculpt and paint papier-mâché heads, and create fabric bodies and embellishments. For example, Benjamin Franklin might carry a kite and key; Paul Revere might carry a silver pot. Finally, students create a web page for the electronic MA Hall of Fame. Each web page includes a paragraph, written and word-processed by the student, and a digital photograph of the puppet taken by the student. You will be able to view this year’s MA Hall of Fame on the Briggs web page (http://www.awrsd.org/jrb) in May. Some puppets are also currently on display in the library.

May is a VERY busy MCAS month at JRB.  ALL students in Grades 3 – 5 will be involved in testing during the two-week period of May 16th – 25th.  Please be sure to have your child arrive to school on time, having had a good night’s sleep and nutritious breakfast.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR SCHOOL

As the warm weather approaches, we suggest consideration regarding student dress.  Appropriate clothing choices are appreciated and students are highly discouraged from wearing “short shorts”, tube tops, halter-tops or any clothing items that expose the midriff.  We also discourage any type of sandals, platform, roller blade, or cleat shoes at any time.  Please refrain from sending your child to school with extra accessories such as chains, as they pose a safety issue on the playground.  Remember…SNEAKERS are a must for physical education.  Sneakers are a practical shoe for any day in school, as we expect children to participate in recess activities.
