On April 5, 6, and 7 children will be screened for Vision and Hearing. Parents need to call the John R. Briggs Elementary School Office (978-827-5750) after March 14, 2005 to make an appointment for one of the above dates. During the registration appointment parents will complete forms for registering their child for Kindergarten for the 2005-2006 school year. Parents are also asked to call the Special Education Office (978-874-6170) to make a separate appointment for screening for any three or four year olds that may have a disability. From the Library Spring will be here in two weeks and our annual Spring Book Fair will be here even sooner! In order to coincide with parent conferences, the Spring Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 14th and end on Friday, March 18th. As always, your help and support in the form of purchases and volunteering would be most appreciated. New and replacement books and other library materials used to support our curricula, or borrowed for enjoyment, have been purchased thanks to your support of our book fairs. Anyone who is able to volunteer to help set up, take down, or work at the Spring Book Fair should call Mrs. Pinsoneault in the library at 827-5750. Thank you! Extended Day News!! Please note that Tuesday 3/15 and Thursday 3/17 are early release days for elementary school ONLY. If you will need Ext. Day services on these days, please reserve by Friday 3/11—no “add-ons” will be accepted after that date. Field trip permission slips for the optional trips are available at the Ext. Day desk. Thank you, Dorene Just a reminder……… As is stated on page 6 of the calendar/handbook….It has been the school’s policy to prohibit the practice of the distribution of birthday or party invitations. There are several reasons for this posture, many of which are legal in nature. The overriding issue is that too many children experience significant hurt when they are not invited to parties. School is definitely not a place where children should have to be subject to such embarrassment and or discomfort in front of peers. Invitations should be handled outside of school. Nature’s Classroom Info Notes from Mrs. Savoie… There will be a parent and student meeting on March 16, 2005 at Overlook Middle School in the Team Room from 7-8:15 p.m. Please come and meet Mr. Stefan Sage from Nature’s Classroom. Question/answer session directly after slide presentation.

YOUNG CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL The 7TH Annual Young Children’s Festival will be held on Sat., March 19th from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Overlook Middle School, Ashburnham. The Ashburnham-Westminster community Partnership celebrates the Week of the Young child at this exciting festival. This festival provides fun, hands-on activities, and crafts for young children, various entertainers, a family raffle, a family show, snacks, valuable resources for families and much, much, more. This event will be free to the public and promises to have surprises and exhibits of interest to families of young children. It will be held in conjunction with the JRB – PTO Easter bunny Breakfast to be held from 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. News from Technology Recycled Printer Cartridge Update Many thanks to all parents, students and teachers who have brought in their empty ink jet printer cartridges. We have earned $200 for the school so far this year! We will use the money to purchase digital video cameras so that students can add short movies to their multimedia projects. Keep those cartridges coming! Remember, any ink jet cartridge with a print head qualifies. That includes most of the Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Compaq, Canon and Apple cartridges. Ink jet cartridges without a print head are accepted for recycle, not payment. That includes mostly Epson cartridges. We do not accept laser printer cartridges. Thanks again for your support! 5th Grade Space Animations The fifth grade students have recently completed their space animations, a project that they have been working on in technology class for the first half of the year. If you have Internet access from home or work, you can find your child's animation by going to the Briggs web page (www.awrsd.org/jrb) and clicking on the "Grade 5 Space Animations" link. Note: if you checked "I deny permission" on the web page publishing permission form that went home at the beginning of the year, your child's work will NOT be posted. The students are very proud of their work and would love to have an opportunity to show their work to you! Tiffany Davis Instructional Technology Specialist COMMUNITY INTEREST
