The Writing Process

Your child may be wanting to write words or asking you how to spell something or is copying words seen in the house.  This is natural and if not happening yet, may as the year progresses.  Please encourage your child to write.  It does not have to be perfect.  We usually explain to the children that at their age they are learning how to spell words and when they get much older their writing will look like ours.  We are accepting of anything they write.  In fact we encourage them to write anything they want.  Following their attempt, we will show them how it will look when they get older.  At this time, we will write the words they tell us and use that time for some instruction. We might stress some beginning sounds ("I wrote c and c is the beginning letter for cat"),  letters they may have that correspond ("you have a d and dog begins with a d"), ending sounds or spacing between words.  Seeing what level the child is at determines what teaching assistance we will give.  If a child is not ready for ending sounds or spacing, but is including beginning letter/sounds, we will concentrate on beginning sounds. The children are at various levels.  This is an on-going process all year.  Each child has their own journal that we work in weekly.  You will have a chance to view these at parent conferences.

We also have a writing area in our room for the children to use at free choice time.  This area is stocked with pencils, crayons, markers, paper, books, stencils, paste, scissors, stickers, greeting card pictures and envelopes.  Providing your child with some of these materials at home and encouraging them to write will help to support what they are doing in school.

YOUNG CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL

The 7TH Annual Young Children’s Festival will be held on Sat., March 19th from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Overlook Middle School, Ashburnham.  The Ashburnham-Westminster community Partnership celebrates the Week of the Young child at this exciting festival.  This festival provides fun, hands-on activities, and crafts for young children, various entertainers, a family raffle, a family show, snacks, valuable resources for families and much, much, more.

This event will be free to the public and promises to have surprises and exhibits of interest to families of young children.  It will be held in conjunction with the JRB – PTO Easter bunny Breakfast to be held from 8:00 – 11:00 a.m.

News from Technology

Recycled Printer Cartridge Update

Many thanks to all parents, students and teachers who have brought in their empty ink jet printer cartridges. We have earned $200 for the school so far this year! We will use the money to purchase digital video cameras so that students can add short movies to their multimedia projects. Keep those cartridges coming!  Remember, any ink jet cartridge with a print head qualifies. That includes most of the Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Compaq, Canon and Apple cartridges. Ink jet cartridges without a print head are accepted for recycle, not payment. That includes mostly Epson cartridges. We do not accept laser printer cartridges. Thanks again for your support!

5th Grade Space Animations

The fifth grade students have recently completed their space animations, a project that they have been working on in technology class for the first half of the year. If you have Internet access from home or work, you can find your child's animation by going to the Briggs web page (www.awrsd.org/jrb) and clicking on the "Grade 5 Space Animations" link.

Note: if you checked "I deny permission" on the web page publishing permission form that went home at the beginning of the year, your child's work will NOT be posted. The students are very proud of their work and would love to have an opportunity to show their work to you!
