Special Education & Pupil Services
#
An Overview of Special Education Services in the Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School District.
Children with special needs differ significantly from other young people in that they require special education and related services in order to develop to their fullest potential. Special education expands a school's capacity to respond effectively to the unique learning and adjustment needs of students with disabilities. These disabilities result from a range of conditions that include: autism, developmental delay, intellectual impairment (hearing, vision, deaf-blind), neurological, emotional, communication, physical and health impairments, as well as specific learning disabilities. Some students may have more than one (multiple) disability or health condition.
The goal of all our special educational programs is the optimal development of the student. To our staff, that means creating and providing those different (specialized) educational experiences in the least restrictive environment that improve the learning and adjustment outcomes of the students with disabilities.
Dr. Alan I. Chates, Director of Special Education-Pupil Services.
