Yahooligans: designed for 8 to 14 year olds. Offers great breadth.

Internet Public Library, Youth Division: designed for children ages 4-11; sites screened for quality of information as well as appropriateness.

Grolier's Online: allows you to search several online encyclopedias WHEN YOU ARE IN SCHOOL (this link will not work from home).
