J. R. Briggs Elementary School

2005 Student Work

Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School District

Fifth grade students have been focused on science, science and more science. A Harvard scientist brought his high-powered microscope to 5B so that students could get an up close and personal look at the hemlock wooly adelgid! The students have been working with scientists from the Harvard Forest to look for signs of this invasive pest in the forests around Ashburnham. We are very proud of fifth grade students Katie, Meghan and Max, who placed in the MA Science Poetry Contest sponsored by Boston College. You can read their winning poems by clicking here!

Ms. Cook recently sponsored a poster content in Physical Education class. Kayla B., from 2LA, created the poster on the left on the theme "My Sports Card." Jessica C. from 5B created the poster on the right on the theme "Saying No to Drugs."

Spring is popping out all over the halls of Briggs Elementary School! Flowers and vases created by kindergarten students from Mrs. Whittington's class.

These "Funny Bunny" original rhyming riddles were created by students in Mrs. Jengo's first grade class. At left, "What do you call a puffy kitty?" Answer: "A fat cat." At right, "What is an animal that is red and that is cardboard?" Answer: "A box fox."

The annual Bunny Breakfast will be held on Saturday, April 8 from 8:00-11:00 at Overlook Middle School. Eat pancakes, take a picture with the Easter bunny, and support the PTO! Stop by the Young Children's Festival as well. See the BAL newsletter for more info.

Teacher Katie Bennett checks on the setup of Star Lab, a traveling indoor planetarium that fifth grade teachers brought to the school as part of their science unit on space. Star Lab is a project of the Boston Museum of Science.

Fifth grade students have also been busy writing poetry for the MA Science Poetry Contest, sponsored by Boston College. Read some of the poems!
On Friday, March 3, 2006, our school will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday by sponsoring a community reading day.  We are asking all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, and neighbors to consider taking an active role by volunteering to read to a child or group of children at our school. If you can spend a few minutes in our school reading to our children, please contact Andrea McGrath at ahill@awrsd.org for additional information.

This month our student council students have taken on an exciting new project. They have created a wall-sized map of the United States for our main hallway. The excitement of all the students has been building as the U.S. is "coming together".

The October student council would like to THANK EVERYONE for contributing to our Coat and Back Pack Drive.  We are very happy with the amount of collected items.  A special THANKS to Kay’s Restaurant in Westminster and Horrigan Cleaners Inc. in Gardner for helping us with this project.

JRB 3rd and 4th grade
students and teachers are also participating in an exciting partnership with the Harvard Forest, an ecological research center located in Petersham, MA. Students are collecting data about the vernal pool and trees on our property.

Above, 3rd grade students learn more about how vernal pools form from one of the Harvard forest scientists. For more information, see this week's and last week's Briggs at Large newsletters.

The PTO and Wildwood Farm are hosting Family Fun Day this Saturday, Oct. 1, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.  Admission is $5.00 per person and includes the petting zoo, corn maze, hayride, and box of popcorn.  Pick a pumpkin for $0.35 per pound and pony rides for $3.00.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20th, Emmett came to visit us.  Emmett is a Search and Rescue Dog who works with Park ranger Jennifer Stowe.  We learned about the intense training that Emmett has undergone and how a Search and Rescue dog is able to find someone who is lost.

We still need your help.  We are fundraising to help purchase First Aid Kits for the Search and Rescue Dog Program. We are asking

everyone to bring a picture of their pet (past or present) or stuffed animal to add to our “Pet Gallery."  Along with your picture (clearly marked with your name and class), please make a donation to our effort.  The “Pet Gallery” is on display as you enter the cafeteria…stop in and visit.  Look for Rory and Brixen! Thanks,  Student Council
