HELP WANTED

Registered Nurses are needed as substitute school nurses for all of our schools in the Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School District.

If interested call Marcia Sharkey RN at Meetinghouse School, 978-874-0163.

What is your child wearing to school?

It has been unseasonably warm, but we ALL know a change is coming.  Please help us out…coats and jackets are a MUST!

Dealing with Stress

Cont. from last week…

Your behavior can set the tone for the rest of the family. When things get crazy, it might help to sit down and talk to your children about it, if they are old enough. If they know you're choosing not to do something (like attend a neighborhood party) because you'd rather spend quality time with them at home, they're more likely to understand and be happy with your decision.

Set "Family Priorities" for the season. One of the biggest causes of family stress during the holidays is simply TOO MUCH to do in a short period of time. From holiday cards to shopping for gifts to attending parties and cooking big meals, we often try to squeeze too much into a short period of time and end up not being able to enjoy any of it!

This year, sit down as a family now and make decisions about the traditions that are most important to all of you. You might be surprised to hear that your child is more interested in attending a service at your place of worship than spending all weekend baking cookies in the kitchen.

Cont. next week.

Snowflake Run

Students in grades 2-5 are invited to participate in a one mile snowflake run (weather permitting).  Students on Monday, December 4th (Grades 2 & 3) & 11th (Grades 4 & 5) [Half days of school] will be able to run one mile on our cross country course with Miss Cook.  The run will begin at 9:00 am and will conclude around 9:30 am.  If your child would like to participate in the run, please sign Miss Cook’s permission slip and return it by the end of this week.  Students are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item (can/box good, paper product) to the run to be donated to the Ashburnham Community Pantry.  [Some suggestions are:  peanut butter, cereals, soups/stews, tuna, pasta/sauces, 100% juices.]

3)      Avoid rubbing your eyes or nose.

4)      Don’t share food or dishes with anyone Even people who appear healthy can spread the flu virus.

OUTDOOR RECESS

Outdoor recess is a vital part of our school program.  Our policy is that all able children participate.  If your child has a condition that prevents him/her from being able to participate, please send a note from your physician. Please make sure your children come properly dressed for outdoor recess, and consider sending extra dry socks, mittens and pants for wet weather.

Connect Ed

As many of you know, our school system subscribes to the Connect Ed Message System.  School-wide announcements are delivered to your home via the telephone.  Just to remind you the Superintendent’s Office will notify you of school cancellations and delays through this service.  We hope this will keep you informed of inclement weather situations.  These phone calls generally are early in the morning, 6:00 a.m.

Educational Shopping

Tis’ the season when parents ask me to recommend computer gadgets and software that are both educational and fun. Here are a few of my favorites, for a wide range of budgets. Happy shopping!

Favorite Gadget: Digital Blue Digital Movie Creator 2.0

This kid-friendly video camera allows kids to capture digital audio and video at or away from the computer, and then edit their movies on the computer. Editing options include transitions, special effects, animations, and titles. The video quality isn’t the greatest, but the camera doesn’t mind getting dropped and the software is easy for kids to use. Cost: $99.00. To get more information or purchase go to: http://www.playdigitalblue.com

Favorite KidPix Alternative: corefx

Everybody LOVES KidPix, but if your kids are ready for a new art/creativity program try corefx. This powerful but easy to use graphics program includes both draw and paint tools and has three levels of difficulty that you can customize for the different members of your family. Cost: $60.00. To get more information or purchase go to: http://www.core-learning.com/

Software to Get the Brain in Gear: Thinkin’ Things

The Thinkin’ Things software builds kids’ critical thinking skills. Collection 1 is designed for the PreK-3 crowd, Collection 2 for grades 2-5, and Collection 3 for grades 3-8. For more information about each collection, go to: http://www.riverdeep.net

Don’t buy at the Riverdeep store, though. This software has been around for a while, so you can find it on shop.com or amazon.com at much better prices: @ $25.00 new, $5.00 if you are willing to risk a used copy (my seven year old has been using our $5.00 used copy from Amazon for two years now with no problems).

Software to Get Them Writing: Kreative Komix Comic Book Makers

A simple-to-use multimedia writing tool that lets kids create animated stories that talk, or print out the comic books and act out the stories using stick puppets. Choose from the Fairy Tale, SuperHero, Dinosaur, or Sci-Fi Monsters edition. Cost: $40.00 each. To get more information or purchase go to: http://www.kreativekomix.com/

As for math, I recommend that you point your kids to some of the many excellent math web sites that are available for free, rather than buying software. Go to the “Student Resources” section of the Briggs web site (www.awrsd.org/jrb) for a list of appropriate sites.
