Professional Development – Nov. 7th

October Student Council

The October Fifth Grade Student Council wants to “THANK” everyone for their support.  We raised $322 for the Heavenly Hats Foundation…We can make a difference in someone’s life!

From Ms. Cook

Congratulations to all of the 4th and 5th grade students who participated in last Friday’s meet against the Overlook middle school team.  The course length was one mile going up and down hills.  A special thank you to all parents and volunteers who made this great event happen!  Keep running!

First Grade and Reading

Reading opens a world of opportunity and is probably the single most important skill your child will learn in school. By helping your child develop good reading habits now, you can make sure that your child’s future will be filled with learning success. These are some ideas to help get you off to a successful start.

* Find a quiet, comfortable place to read with your child at a special time each day.

* Encourage your child to share books with you, even if your child can’t read yet.

*  Show your child that reading is an important part of your day. Explain how you read a variety of materials every day, such as mail, magazines, food packages, and recipes.

*  Help your child select books you will both enjoy.

*  Encourage your child to look at the pictures to provide meaning and context for the story.

*  Reading sparks a child’s imagination and inspires a lifetime love of books and learning.

From The Library

We will be having a Fall Scholastic Book Fair in the Briggs Library from Wednesday, Nov. 15th through Tuesday, Nov. 21st. The Book Fair will be open during the evenings of parent conferences.  We hope that many parents will be able to stop by before or after conferences.  Proceeds from the Book Fair allow new resources to be added to the library.

As in the past, students will be given an opportunity to visit the Book Fair with their teacher.  Also, a teacher “wish list” will be posted.  This gives parents an opportunity to make a donation to their child’s classroom library.

As always, parent volunteers are needed to work at the Book Fair.  If you can help out, please call Lynne in the library.  If you already signed up to volunteered, you will be contacted.

     Hope to see you there!

Counselor’s Corner

A word on bullying from Grade 3 . . .

*Our role play with Mrs. Gagnon’s class sparked questions/comments around what to do when confronted by a bully. Max reminded us, “If you see bullying, go and report it!” while Connor taught us to “Look a bully in the eye and say, ‘Don’t Bully Me!’.” In his assignment, Whit wrote, “I learned that the bully feels big and the victim feels small.”

* After the bullying program, Mrs. Munroe’s class compiled a list of what they learned. They also prepared several questions for both Officer Ahearn and I to discuss during our visit. In her assignment, Erin wrote, “If a bully is bullying you, he is trying to control you.” Nate wrote about how to deal with a bully. Nate suggests to “Try to make a joke with the bully.”

* Mrs. Bastille’s class also shared their written assignments with us. Steven said, “I learned that I need to think first before doing anything.” Dominic learned to “Look out for people,” and Alyssa learned “To never call people names.”

*  Conversation in Mrs. Bennett’s class focused on the verbal/emotional side of bullying. In her assignment, Helen wrote that she learned about “Appropriate things like respect and helping others.” Sarah shared, “I learned to stand up for myself.” Dylan reminded us that “Starting rumors and telling jokes about someone is not ok.”

Musical Theater Workshop!!!

Thursdays 3:00-4:15 p.m.

The “Musical Theater Workshop” is now up and running at J.R. Briggs!!  This workshop, headed by Mrs. Bollous and Mr. Seager, will not only be the production of a musical play, but it will be one that the students will write and produce themselves!  The workshop, offered to all students, will consist of two 10-week sessions.  Session I will focus on developing the play itself, including plot outline, character development, and scriptwriting, as well as learning about acting techniques and stagecraft.  Session II will consist of the auditioning, rehearsal, and production of the children’s original masterpiece!

Although the workshop has begun, it is never too late to register to have your child join the fun.   Contact Mrs. Bollous or Mr. Seager for a registration form and brochure.

For those who crave drama in their lives!
