We are welcoming two new staff members to our team this year, Lori Cutting and Marc Theriault. Many of you may know Mr. Theriault from Extended Day or as a substitute teacher. He is a valuable member of our new team, who’s flexible and willing to learn and try anything to help our students. Miss Cutting is brand new to Briggs School; she started with the BEST program over the summer. She is a hard worker and a quick learner who never gives up. They are both currently working full time here as well as continuing their education with Masters level classes in the evenings. We are very lucky to have both of these great people as part of our team. Extended Day Our Extended Day Program offers child care 6:30 am – 6:00 pm throughout the school year. COUNSELOR’S CORNER On behalf of the staff and students of JRB, I would like to thank the PTO for helping fund Jason Kallio’s Say it With Magic, Vanish Bullying Program. Jason’s program was the start of our year long, school-wide anti-bullying campaign. The program focused on bullying behavior (how to stop), bystander behavior (how to help), and victim behavior (how to help self). In addition, the three types of bullying (physical, verbal, and emotional) were discussed. Through discussion and the use of magic tricks, Mr. Kalio also challenged students to “think before they speak” and “to put yourself in someone else’s shoes”. Other points included, showing confidence, helping others, and working together to create change. Mr. Kalio gave each grade level an assignment which involved drawing, writing about what they learned from the presentation, as well as the first step in creating a Bully Control Zone. Following his presentation, School Resource Officer, Kevin Ahearn and I visited each classroom to receive feedback and distribute the Bully Control Zone contracts. Each student will take part in signing the contract, committing to help keep their classroom and school bully free. Each classroom teacher was given two contracts. One will be hung in the classroom and the other to be included in a collage that will be hung somewhere inside the school. Be on the lookout for periodic updates on other school-wide anti-bullying related activities throughout the school year. Please talk to your children about this topic and what they’ve been learning. Together, we can help to make JRB BULLY FREE!SCOUT HOUSE FUNDRAISING YARD SALE Sat., Sept. 23rd Gingerbread Lane (just off Rte. 12)
