MCAS

Thank you students, parents, and staff for making this round of MCAS testing go so smoothly.  Our students worked very hard and put forth a great effort.

Please be on the Lookout!!!

Concerns are arising nationally regarding the distribution of “fake candy” to young students across the country.  Please be aware if your child is offered something that looks like “strawberry poprocks”.  It smells like strawberry and is very dangerous (crystal meth).  Children are thinking that it is candy and are being rushed off the Emergency Room in dire condition.  Please instruct your child NOT to accept candy that looks like this from ANYONE!

Lost and Found

Time is running out…items will ALL be donated before the end of the school year.  We still have pairs of boots on display.

Staff Appreciation Day

Third Grade News

The third graders will be going on a field trip to the Meetinghouse Cemetery at the end of May.  This field trip will enhance our understanding of the Revolutionary War era.  The stones feature typical and unusual examples of gravestone artwork.

The published books were recently given out to the children.  The books turned out wonderfully and the children are very proud of their accomplishment.

We recommend that you purchase the 4th grade tool kit.  It is an easy way to get the supplies you need without purchasing unnecessary materials.

MCAS testing is done for the year.  You can expect the results in the fall.

Homework will conclude after the Memorial weekend.  Thanks for all your support!

Over the summer review math facts and READ, READ, READ and READ some more.

Have a safe and wonderful summer!

The Third Grade Team

Field Day Volunteers Needed!

If you would like to volunteer for Field Day, please contact Miss Cook.  The dates are grades 3-5, KB, KS(am) Tuesday, June 5th [Rain date:  Thursday, June 7th] and grades 1 & 2, KW, KS(pm) Wednesday, June 6th [Rain date:  Friday, June 8th].

From the Library:

All library books are due back on Wednesday, June 6th.  Please help your children locate any missing library materials and return them as soon as possible.  Under the bed, on their own bookshelves, in their closets, and under the couch seem to be where many missing books are found!

Please also encourage your children to do some reading everyday during the summer.  It helps them so much to become better readers!  Stevens Memorial Library in the center of Ashburnham is also open all summer and there is a summer reading program there for all children.  Hope you can participate!

Musical Theatre Workshop

Your Help is Needed!

Mr. Seager and Mrs. Bollous are looking for volunteers to help them get ready for the big Musical Theater Workshop shows!

They need help running practice scenes with the children, after school during rehearsal days, which are Thursdays, and are likely to expand to other days as the deadlines approach.

They are also looking for people with carpentry skills to help design and build sets.

Let’s not forget the actual performances!  They need back stage help with stage management and general assistance.

If you are able to help, it will certainly be a good time, and you’ll get a chance to mingle with lots of excited kids!

Please contact the school for Mr. Seager or Mrs. Bollus, as soon as possible!

Fine Arts Night

This year’s Fine Arts Night will be held on May 31, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the J.R. Briggs Elementary School.  All students, families and friends are invited to come view, listen, enjoy and appreciate the artistic and musical achievements of our students.

The evening will include an all-school art exhibition that will feature visual art projects created under the supervision of art teacher, Peggy Richard

The J. R. Briggs Beginning Band and Concert Band will be performing under the direction of Ed Tree.

The J.R. Briggs Chorus and Select Chorus will also be performing that evening.  Director Marcie Bollous has selected songs from Wicked, Seussical the Musical, and the Beatles for your listening enjoyment.

This event is a great opportunity to celebrate the arts taking place at J.R. Briggs School, and it is free and open to the public, so mark your calendars.

Fine Arts Night…Help!!!

Volunteers are needed to help hang this year's art show. If anyone is available to help Mrs. Richard on Wednesday morning May 30, starting at 8:30 please email her at mrichard@awrsd.org or call the school at 978-827-5750. Thank you!

Kick Off Fun Family Time

Excerpts from the Worcester T & G

You can never recapture family time; we all know time passes too quickly.  Take a moment to think of ways you can capture those precious memories with your family.

  Schedule It!

If you treat time with the family as some-thing as important as a business meeting or an appointment, you are more likely to do it.

  Use convenience items

Family dinners are an important part of the family dynamic.  It is easy to get caught up in today’s cultural speed.  Take time to sit down to a family dinner at these 50% of the time.  Today’s supermarkets are full of convenient mealtime choices if you do not have time to create your own “gourmet” meal.

  Manage time wisely

When the children are in bed, may be a good time to do a load of laundry, lay out their clothes, or change the oil in the car.  This way you use the productive hours to spend time with the family instead of with your home appliance.

  Make family a priority.

Work hours seems to be getting longer, as well as the drive to and from work.  Don’t let work control your life.  Try to arrange for one or two “early” nights each week.

  Reign in extracurricular activities

It is important to engage your children in “extra” activities; however, a schedule full of practices and meetings can stress out every-one.  Set a limit to the number of activities to allow for free time to be together.

Get “un-wired”; at least for a while

Open up communication by turning off the TV, MP3 player, cellphone, and video game.  Use these moments to engage in dialogue with the family.

  Don’t underestimate the family vacation

We all remember those family trips from our past.  These are the memories you will cherish.  Family vacations do not have to be lavish trips.  Smaller, more intimate vacations can be the best for family moments.
