January Student Council

This month our 5th Grade Student Council will be working with first grade teacher, Mrs. Murphy.  During the summer, Mrs. Murphy spent one month teaching in a rural school in Thailand.  This school has very limited supplies.  We need to help!  We would like everyone to donate a pencil or magic marker.  THANKS!

First Grade News

  All of the first graders have just finished learning many strategies for addition and subtraction.  Not only are these strategies important for them to know but memorization of these facts should not be ignored.  The automaticity of these facts will benefit your child as they move on to second grade.

  You can help with this at home by:

*using flash cards

* practicing doubles (example, 2 + 2 =4)

*practicing doubles + 1 (example, if 6 + 6 = 12 then 6 + 7 =13)

* playing card games

* playing math games

  You can make your own games or many can be found at your local dollar store.  If you would like ideas for other games, you can contact your child’s teacher.  Other math concepts that should be practiced are counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s, counting backwards from 20, and even and odd.

  These activities should be fun!  Practice while driving in the car, before bedtime or at the dinner table.

News from Ms. Badolato

Bullying is never OK.

Parents can teach their children that it’s not normal to hurt others – or to be hurt.

Talk with your children often.

Make it easy for him or her to come to you with problems.

Be firm about bullying.

Let your child know that bullying is not acceptable. Establish clear family rules against it.

Take action.

If you suspect bullying, or if your child’s school contacts you about an incident, take it calmly and seriously. Work with your child and the school to stop bullying. Don’t give up!
