Second Grade News

PENGUINS ON PARADE

The second graders are currently studying about penguins.  This particular unit is a very popular one, and everyone is excited to learn more about these whimsical birds.  As a result of our study of the Antarctic and penguins, here are some learning outcomes students should know and be able to do:

*  Know what a continent is and name the seven continents

* Identify Antarctica and describe its topography, climate, animal and plant life

* Compare the various species of penguins and what characteristics identify them as birds

* Be able to explain how penguins survive in such a harsh climate

*  Know how to read a thermometer, and tell the freezing point, average body temperature and boiling point

*  Write an informative essay on all the things they have learned about penguins

During this unit of study we will be writing poems, letters, informational essays and cartoons, which will be compiled into individual student books, to be published, and offered for you to purchase, as was done last year.

Computer Safety

As students become older and begin using the computer more and more independently, you may consider a few suggestions for helping to keep your child safe and responsible when using the computer at home.

If your child will be using the computer for research at home, you might want to investigate filtering options that are available from your internet service provider.  An alternative would be to limit your child’s searching to kid-friendly search engines, i.e. yagooligans.com or kidsclick.org.

Please supervise your child’s use of email and instant messaging.  Ask your child who he/she is communicating with on the computer.  Discuss what is appropriate to say when writing another person on the computer and what to do if you receive an inappropriate message.

  • Set time limits
  • Place the computer in a public space in your home

     – the den or kitchen (not in the child’s bedroom).

Don’t hesitate to call or email Mrs. Davis if you have any questions.

A Message From

 Officer Ahearn

. Please DO NOT enter the horseshoe when the cruiser’s lights are turned on at the entrance of the first driveway. Please use the far entrance as a means to the back parking lot. Passing buses while red lights are on is unlawful and could result in a fine.  Thank you for your cooperation in helping to ensure the safety of our students.
